9 To Know: New England Procase Underclass Commits

Players and prospects from all over the northeast including eight different states made their way to Connecticut for the second annual PBR New England Procase. Last year’s event proved to be the springboard and kick start to 1B Grant LaVigne’s ascension to becoming the 42nd overall pick in the 2018 draft to the Colorado Rockies. This year, 60 players from three different classes (2019-2021) took part in showcasing their skills in a pro-style workout in front of nearly 20 MLB scouts. In the coming days, In this edition of On the Hunt, National Crosschecker, Shooter Hunt, takes a look at some of the committed underclassmen who stood out on the day.

Matthew Garbowski C / OF / New Fairfield, CT / 2021

The UConn Huskies have had a good string of quality catching prospects, and Garbowski might be the next in line. Just a sophomore, Garbowski is still filling out a lean, athletic, 6-foot, 185-pound frame that has some proportional strength present. A left-handed hitter, Garbowski rocks back with a reverse toe-tap that loads the hands deeper, down and back. With a short stride, he works uphill through the zone, showcasing the ability to get the ball in the air along with projectable power that he will could quickly approach as he continues filling out. He took one of the more impressive sounding rounds of the day providing for firm contact throughout. Behind the plate, he possesses loose hips with soft hands, and shows signs of being an above average receiver moving forward. He was more controlled with his footwork and transfer allowing for his 81 mph arm to work freely in producing accurate throws to the bag at 2.01-2.06. I suspect his pop times will quickly improve given the foundation of fundamentals that he showcases along with the strength of the arm. As a left-handed hitting catcher with soft hands and a projectable frame, Garbowski is a player to remember, and will be fun to follow the next few years.
