Clemmey Eager To Take His Game To Vanderbilt

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Not a lot of athletes are able to say what Alex Clemmey did assessing his recent college commitment.

“I’m very relieved to have such a big life decision made at 14-years-old,” related the Bishop Hendricken incoming sophomore, who has decided on Vanderbilt as a future home.

Now 15 after his birthday on July 18, the third-rated 2023 in New England admits the recruiting process was not what he expected.

“It was very different with COVID-19 and not being able to take visits,” Clemmey explained. “You have to do multiple calls every Friday to show how responsible you need to be calling all the coaches. But there was really no downside to the process.”

Why would there be any drawback when schools like Maryland, Duke, Auburn, Northeastern, Boston College, Rhode Island and Tulane are showing an interest along with Vanderbilt, the last College World Series champion.

“My pitching coach John DeRouin sent my video to Scott Baker (associate head coach and pitching coach) at Vanderbilt three months ago,” the second-ranked sophomore southpaw in New England reflected. “We had one call a week after that, but then it picked up rapidly.”

Hard work brought improvement which led to his notoriety... .

“Last year maturity kicked in and I became more serious and more in-depth into baseball,” Clemmey pointed out. “Plyocare, long toss, nutrition and what to eat along with weight lifting … I was doing everything from the standpoint of improving my game.”

Being shut down during spring season due to the early stage of the virus also proved beneficial in the eyes of the 6-5 185-pound left-hander.

“COVID-19 got me where I am today,” Clemmey said. “Sitting with John on phone calls would not have happened if COVID had not happened. Every day I’d do something new to help my game. Everyday I had new goals.”

When finally back on the mound, for the PBR New England Top Prospect Games in early July, Clemmey shined.

“It was the first time I faced live action in a game-situation and anxiety kicked in,” Clemmey noted. “I pitched three innings and had seven or eight Ks, sitting 83-85 and topping at 86. It felt great being where I want to be … in the majors standing on the mound.

“Vanderbilt watched a live recording from that and it sparked their attention to have a zoom call with my family. It was great for the family to get to know the coach and get my parents involved in the decision. We talked about education first and foremost and also about going to the next level.”

Although there was no official in-person visit, Clemmey saw a clip of what it was like at the Nashville campus.

“Coach Brown drove to Vanderbilt and gave a virtual tour for me which was great,” Clemmey said. “From the baseball field and facilities to the classroom, it was very, very impressive.”

Size and stature is a big part of what Vanderbilt sees in Clemmey.

“They like my projectability,” Clemmey pointed out. “They like my frame at 6-5, 185 and where I can be three years from now.”

Clemmey also enjoys thinking about where he will be at the age of 18.

“First and foremost you get a world class education,” Clemmey said of reasons for selecting Vanderbilt as his college of choice. “It’s also the best baseball in the country. And they develop you into a man to pursue your career after baseball is over.”

But baseball is what Clemmey has grown up loving and hopes to play for as long as possible.

“My grandfather on my mom’s side has been there since day one,” Clemmey said in reference to Charles Harley being a major influence at the beginning of his baseball journey. “He used to play baseball with me every day up until I was six-years-old.”

Matt Hopkins, owner of Hop’s Athletic Performance, along with pitching coach John DeRouin are others credited with helping get Clemmey to the point of being a Division I commit to Vanderbilt.

“I still have a lot to work on,” Clemmey said. “I have to work on my arm slot and try to get my curveball more dynamic. I also want to work on my change and I also need to work on being able to locate the fastball everywhere, so when I get to Vanderbilt I’m ready to be in the starting rotation as a freshman.”

After all, there is plenty Clemmey believes he can provide the SEC program.

“I can bring my mental game and my knowledge of pitching to the table,” Clemmey said. “I’m really looking forward to bringing my talent to Vanderbilt when the time comes.”
