Day 1 of the Shipyard / PBR Showdown featured 5 teams in three games.  Below we recap the games from Shipyard Park, highlighting player performances.  We also have a link to our Scout Blog for the weekend, with in-depth player analysis. 

As we continue to follow the tournament play, we will update player stats and highlight an all-tournament team.

 

Shipyard / PBR Showdown

 

Day 1 – Friday March 5, 2021

 

Game 1

Lugoff-Elgin HS – 11                      James Island – 3

Lugoff-Elgin jumped out to an early lead, powered by a 4 run 2^nd inning and the work of staring pitcher Witt Branham.  Branham worked into the 5^th, punching 6 while surrendering two runs, each in his final frame.

In total, Lugoff-Elgin would pile up 19 runs, and utilize 6 walks, to compile their 11 runs.  Branham helped his own cause from the leadoff position, reaching base 5 times and scoring 2 runs.  Cobe Evans, Will Morris, and Zane Catoe each had three hits in the offensive attack.

Game 2

Legion Collegiate Academy – 3                 Ashley Ridge HS – 2

Legion Collegiate (LCA) overcame an early deficit by scoring 2 runs in the 4^th, keyed by a Kollin Crepeau inside-the-park homerun to leadoff the inning.  With two outs, and the bases loaded, Ryan Deal walked, giving LCA the lead.

Tied at 2 in the top of the 6^th, LCA would take the lead for good.  Devin Parks doubled to leadoff the inning, advancing to 3B on a fly ball out.  With two outs, Deal would reach on an error, scoring Parks.

Each club used two arms.  LCA’s Xavier Pelzer picked up the win tossing 5 innings.  Roman Edwards would seal the win with 2 scoreless innings for the save.  Nick Vaughn and Chase Stryker would work to match the LCA duo, only allowing 2 earned runs while combining to strike out 9.

Game 3

James Island – 4              Stratford HS – 4

 A pitchers dual for 5 innings turned into a late inning nail bitter as James Island and Stratford played to a 4-4 tie in the day’s finale.  Stephen West for James Island worked a complete game, throwing 71 of his 104 pitches for strikes.  He was matched into the 6^th by Josh Davis from Stratford. 

James Island would push the 1^st two runs of the night across the plate on a well executed squeeze play.  With runners on 2B and 3B, Chase Worrill dropped down a great bunt, scoring both runs.

Heading to the bottom of the 7^th, Stratford had pushed their lead to 4-1.  James Island would not go quietly staring the inning with an infield error and a walk before Brett Marrs singled to load the bases.  Three more errors sandwiched a fielder’s choice out, cutting down a potential run, but leaving the score tied at 4.  James Island would regroup, getting a fielder’s choice and pop up to leave the bases loaded. 

After a brief conference with the coaches, the game was ended with a tie score.
