Team Carolina Future Games - NC Outfielder Analysis

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

The PBR Future Games is the biggest underclass recruiting event in the country.  The 2019 version moved to LakePoint in Emerson, GA, and continued to grow in terms of the talent on the field and the coaches and schools in attendance.  Over 500 of the top uncommitted underclass players from across the country, and Canada, performed in front of over 320 college coaches and scouts.

For the second year, Team Carolina combined the top prospects from North Carolina and South Carolina.  Position players participated in a full pro-style workout on day 1, with most of the workouts coming on one field for the coaches and scouts.  The following three days saw Team Carolina take on Team Georgia, Team Florida, and Team Alabama.

As we continue our coverage of the 2019 PBR Future Games, we begin to jump into the individual player evaluations.  Today we look at the outfielders from North Carolina that represented Team Carolina.

Team Carolina Analysis: NC Outfielders

Stewart Evans OF / Scotland, NC / 2021

Physical presence with definition on the frame at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds.  Athletic with strength and quickness present.  Ran a 6.90 sixty in the workout.  Followed that up with a positional velocity of 85 mph from right field and an exit velocity of 92 mph off the barrel.  A right handed hitter, sits slightly crouched with a wide base.  The bat rests on the shoulder.  Loads back with a leg kick.  Hands work the bat head to a vertical position.  Average stride.  Works for leverage through the ball.  Pull side gap power.  Good bat speed with a high finish.  Potential to project as a middle of the order type hitter at the next level.  Still developing in the outfield to allow his athleticism to play through.  Secures the ball outside the left foot with an exchange at the midsection.  Long arm action, laying the throwing arm off in the back.  Over-the-top release with average carry and some feel for accuracy.

Archie Dean Herring OF / SS / Westchester Country Day, NC / 2021

Strong, compact frame at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds.  Game changing speed that translated into game situations.  Ran a 6.38 sixty, an event record at the time that was bested later in this event.  In game action ran a 3.88 on a ground ball to shortstop and stole multiple bases.  His speed and threat of running created issues for pitchers and defenses throughout the three games played.  Speed is beginning to translate to the outfield where he has the chance to become a premium defender in the middle of the field.  Athletic through the catch and transition with a long arm swing to an over-the-top release.  Good accuracy with average carry at 86 mph out of the hand.  Right handed hitter is tall and rhythmic in the pre-pitch.  Loads with a leg kick, working the bat head from a flat position to a vertical launch.  Average stride.  Direct path, working gap-to-gap.  Good barrel awareness.  Patient approach in games.  Good strike zone awareness.  Flashed the ability to get to good fastballs and adjust to barrel breaking balls as well.  Potential elite defender with a top of the order skill set.

John Newton OF / 3B / Cuthbertson , NC / 2021

Committed to UNCW shortly after Team Carolina’s 1st game of the event.  Athletic frame.  6-foot, 174 pounds.  Sick on the workout day and did not run the 60 but put up impressive numbers with a positional velocity of 92 mph from the outfield and an exit velocity of 99 mph off the barrel.  Right handed hitter is balanced and tall.  Quiet setup with a small hand load, working the bat off his shoulder.  Short stride.  Direct path with strong hands.  Line drive approach, working the middle of the field.  Leverage and backspin with plenty of barrel in BP.  Barrel awareness translates into games with several loud at-bats.  Athletic with easy actions through the ball in the outfield.  Clean transitions with a medium arm stroke to an over-the-top slot.  Good carry and accuracy.  Chance to produce early at the next level.

Lukas Schramm OF / C / Apex , NC / 2022

Physical athlete with advanced quickness and strength in a 6-foot-2, 205 pound frame.  Filled the stat sheet on the workout day.  Positional throw from the outfield at 95 mph.  Ran a 6.92 sixty.  Produced an exit velocity of 96 mph off the barrel.  Right handed hitter works from a tall, balanced stance.  Slight leg kick to load the weight.  Medium stride.  Works for extension.  Advanced bat speed.  Ball jumps when on the barrel.  Chance to develop into a power threat in the coming years.  From the outfield, the arm is elite with advanced carry and good accuracy.  The workout translated into game play where several throws limited runners advancement with the arm strength and accuracy.  High ceiling as the frame continues to mature and he gets more game reps under his belt.
