AL/TN Unsigned Senior Showcase: Quick Hits

PBR Alabama & Tennessee Staff

MADISON, AL - The AL/TN Unsigned Senior Showcase was held on Sunday, November 6th at James Clemens HS in Madison, AL. This event was an open event that consisted of unsigned prospects from the Class of 2023 in Alabama and Tennessee. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion, participated in defensive evaluations, ran the 60 yard-dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers threw in bullpens and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Sunday.

Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from Sunday. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release different statistical leaderboards for the event then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.

Alabama Prospects

+ 3B Garrett Calhoun, Handley (AL), 2023
Uncommitted. 6-foot-0, 190-pounds. Easily one of the top performers from yesterday's event, posting some of the top statistics in multiple categories and looking the part in the process. Using a strong frame, Calhoun has the looks of being a future middle-of-the-order infielder for someone at the next level with gap-to-gap pop from the right side. With some rhythm in the swing, the unsigned senior took some aggressive swings resulting in a top EV at 99.0 mph while showing above average bat speed, as well. Also a 7.25 runner in the 60 and was a 80 mph across the infield.

+ 1B Preston Lewis, New Hope (AL), 2023
Uncommitted. 6-foot-4, 245-pounds. One of the more physically imposing prospects from the event, Lewis showed some immense pull-side power during his round of BP. Hitting multiple balls out of the park during his round, the unsigned senior posted the highest EV from the event at 100.2 mph with his last swing traveling at 388 ft. Lewis showed a heavy barrel hitting the from left side with his power being his best tool from an offensive perspective. He's also shown some athleticism for his size running a 7.17 in the 60, as well. Could be another solid addition for a program at the next level.

+ 3B/RHP Galen Evans, Huntsville (AL), 2023
Uncommitted. 5-foot-10, 155-pounds. Evans certainly showed the progress he's made over the course of the past two years, both physically and with his skill set. Now standing with a more refined frame and some quick twitch, Evans was also a leader across multiple statistical categories from yesterday's event. The unsigned senior posted multiple low-90 EV's with a top @ 96.6 mph with some elite bat speed (75.8 mph average) using our Blast Motion sensor. In addition, Evans also hopped on the mound and worked up to 84 mph with solid secondaries, as well. Another intriguing unsigned senior.

+ C/RHP Mason Freeman, Bob Jones (AL), 2023
Uncommitted. 5-foot-11, 205-pounds. Strong and durable frame with some defensive versatility. Flashed some impressive pull-side power during his round of BP while looking to lift and create damage with each swing from the right side. Posted a top EV at 95.8 mph with an average at 88.4 mph. Led the event in multiple statistical categories that included pop time (2.08-2.17), C velocity (76 mph) and infielder velocity (82 mph). Uses strength well throughout his swing, especially in the lower-half, with the ability to consistently find the barrel during his round of BP. Also worked up to 84 mph with a quick arm on the mound.

Tennessee Prospects

+ RHP Jase Phillips, East Hamilton (TN), 2023
Uncommitted. 6-foot-3, 183-pounds. Tall frame w/ long limbs and plenty of projection to fill out. Clean, controlled tempo delivery. High leg lift into drop n drive lower half w/ closed toe landing. Long, loose arm action working up to H 3/4 slot. FB at 86-87 T88 w/ elevated spin (T 2533 rpm), but late life and some horizontal bite. Jumps out the hand and attacks the zone w/ location. Best secondary is SL at 76-78 (T 2390 rpm) w/ fair bite and flashes of upside. Plays best when he maintains arm speed and trusts the grip w/ potential to be a put away offering. Rounds mix with splitter at 76-78 w/ downward action and occasional arm side action, creating a strong tunnel off FB.

+ C Aslan Hullett, Brentwood Academy (TN), 2023
Uncommitted. 5-foot-11, 220-pounds. Boxy, muscular frame w/ present strength. Relaxed, slightly open stance w/ toe tap stride and quiet hand load. Quick hands and above average bat speed w/ uphill plane. Some lift but looks to do damage, working gap to gap w/ some power upside (T 94.9). Stood out defensively as he was consistent in pitch framing and blocking. Workers mentality, throwing the body around to deaden the ball on blocks and steal borderline strikes. Short, compact arm action w/ good accuracy and ok arm strength. Best pop of 2.17, but can clean up some transfers to improve there.

+ RHP/3B Braylon Cline, Hendersonville (TN), 2023
Uncommitted. 6-foot-0, 185-pounds. Lean, athletic frame w/ room to add mass and strength. Tall, slightly open stance w/ small leg lift and rhythm in hands. Generates average bat speed and gets on plane w/ some lift at times. Pull side approach and flashes of pop (T 87.5; Avg: 81.5) w/ future projection as bat speed improves. Defensively, moves well and solid actions. Consistent footwork w/ fair hands and transfers. Compact, quick arm w/ solid arm strength and accuracy. Logged 7.31 sixty. On the mound, slow, controlled delivery w/ quiet actions. Smaller leg lift into tall n fall lower w/ closed toe landing. Long arm action w/ soft stab into 3/4 slot. FB at 77-81 T82 w/ some arm side action and occasional sink. Lower spin (T 2118 rpm), playing best down in the zone. CB at 70-72 w/ some tightness and downer action. Flashes of upside, but so-so command. Showed feel for CH at 74-77 w/ arm side fade from LHH. Located down w/ strong tunnel off FB. Not overly polished, but two-way potential w/ athleticism and upside.

+ MINF Ben Caldwell, Grace Christian Academy (TN), 2023
Uncommitted. 6-foot-2, 160-pounds. Wiry, lean frame w/ length in limbs and room to add mass. Balanced, slightly open stance w/ relaxed hands and some rhythm. Generates average bat speed and compact stroke w/ direct path to contact. Line drive hitter w/ consistent contact (T88; Avg: 84.4 exit velo) and some pop upside as bat speed improves. Defensively, moves well w/ some athleticism (7.30 sixty). Consistent footwork and solid hands w/ smooth transitions. Long, arm action w/ some effort and ok arm strength, projects best at 2B.
