Game Report: ECS @ Bartlett

Tim Kay
PBR Tennessee Director of Scouting

On Tuesday, ECS traveled to Bartlett to play a varsity and jv doubleheader.  This was a brisk day, especially after the sun set, where there was a heavy wind and felt like it was in the 20’s.  With us seeing ECS the next day against Collierville, we will wait to discuss them in the next game report.

Before we went to Bartlett, we checked out an inning plus of Harding and Memphis University School.  MUS was previously written about here.  On Harding, a couple players jumped out in a short look:

-       2020 OF Dawson Simmons hit in the 3-hole, projectable lean, athletic frame w/ feel for barrel and some bat speed.

-       2019 SS Collin Hoover hit cleanup.  Stood out in between innings at shortstop, featuring arm strength w/ carry through target.  May serve as the team’s closer as well.

Here is a look at some Bartlett standouts (check out the Twitter feed for some video highlights):

Bartlett Hitters

BJ Banyon OF / Bartlett, TN / 2020

OF showed plus run speed while picking up a double in game action.  6’0, 175-pounder, athletic frame w/ lean strength, projectable.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into shift of weight w/ mini leg kick.  Proper bat path w/ feel for contact, 0 swing and miss on 3 swings.  Flashes bat speed through the zone.  Up the middle approach.  Plus runner underway, takes some time to accelerate, get to top speed.  Defensively, was not tested in the OF, showed developing arm strength in I/O.

Jalen Fithian SS / 3B / Bartlett, TN / 2020

IF jumped out in I/O and parlayed that into a strong all-around performance in the game, making an impact on the bases and collecting 2 hits.  Short, athletic profile w/ lean strength, lot of physical projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ bat tapping on his back shoulder into mini leg kick and proper load.  Feel for barrel w/ bat-speed through the zone.  Wants to hit gaps and use above average speed to leg out extra bases.  Defensively, showed soft hands w/ middle IF actions, arm strength w/ carry to target.

Cole Smith SS / Bartlett, TN / 2019

Ole Miss commit showed premium hands w/ projectable frame.  6’3, 165-pounder w/ some present strength, ultra-projectable.  Had an uneventful day offensively, picking up a walk, sac fly and getting hit by a pitch.  Offensively, hits in a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ hand rhythm into shift of weight, stride and load.  Generates bat speed through the zone.  Just needs to add strength to begin seeing offensive results, projectable pull power.  Stood out in I/O w/ premium, soft hands, good feet.  Features arm strength w/ carry to target, projectable above average arm strength.
