Game Report: ECS @ Collierville

On Wednesday, ECS traveled to Collierville to play a varsity scrimmage. This was a cloudy day w/ wind. This was a brief look at Collierville’s hitters, as most had only 2 plate appearances.

After the Collierville game, we checked out about 3 innings of St. Benedict and Arlington. Some quick observations from the quick look:

- 2018’s Tate Kolwyck (Vanderbilt) and Hunter Goodman (Memphis) are as advertised early on. Kolwyck made a nice play in the hole from SS and shows a presence in the box. Goodman hit a ball about 5 miles foul, showing off his premium power.

- SBA seniors Will Huber (Arkansas State), Jaylen Wilbon (Memphis) and Chase Phillips (UT-Martin) all found barrels in the only at bats of them I saw. Huber laced a single up the middle, Wilbon barreled a single and Phillips laced a double to right center field.

- SBA junior Christian Presley laced a double to right field, showing off athleticism and bat speed.

Collierville Hitters

Mitch Austin 2B / SS / Collierville, TN / 2020

2B was their leading hitter last year, hitting over .400 as a freshman. Medium, athletic frame, evenly-proportioned w/ some projection. Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into shift of weight, stride and load. Knack for contact. Line drive, gap to gap hitter, comfortable using all fields. Defensively, showed off enough arm strength to suggest that he could play on the left side of the infield w/ reliable hands.

Alec Bouton C / Collierville, TN / 2018

Lyon commit picked up hits in both of his at bats. Medium, athletic frame w/ some lean strength, some physical projection. Offensively, hits from a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into shift of weight, knee to knee stride and proper load. Up the middle approach w/ some barrel feel. Gap power. Defensively, shows soft hands behind the plate w/ low target. Reliable receiver w/ developing arm strength.

Evan Chatlosh 1B / Collierville, TN / 2018

Uncommitted physical 1B has a presence in the box. Medium, physical, bulldog frame w/ present strength, close to mature frame. Offensively, hits from a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into stride and load. Only saw take 2 swings, patient approach w/ idea of his strike zone. Feel to use all fields, frame suggests power potential. Was not tested defensively.

Riley Davis C / Collierville, TN / 2019

Catcher had a nice offensive day, collecting a triple and a walk in his 2 plate appearances. Medium, athletic frame w/ lean strength, some physical projection. Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, upright stance w/ short hand rhythm into stride and short load. Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft. Clean, repeatable swing w/ gap power. Defensively, moves well behind the plate w/ good low target. Shows soft hands as a receiver. As a thrower, kept popping better and better every half inning, including a 2.03 in his last inning behind the plate.

Noah Hattier SS / 2B / Collierville, TN / 2019

SS shows above average hands, defense first player w/ range. Medium, lean, athletic frame w/ little present strength, projectable. Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, upright stance w/ short hand rhythm into shift of weight, mini leg kick and proper load. Lunges at the baseball, relies on timing to find barrels. Shines defensively, reliable glove w/ plus hands, developing arm strength.

Ty Leatherwood C / OF / Collierville, TN / 2019

Middle Tennessee State commit had 1 at bat on this day, which is our first look at him. Will miss most of the spring after transferring from Christian Brothers. Medium, athletic, high-waisted frame w/ projection. Offensively, hits from a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ hand rhythm into stride and load. Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft. Projects to hit for average and power. Did not see defensively.

Kobe Perkins OF / Collierville, TN / 2019

Athletic OF leads off and ran a 4.37 from the right side to beat out an infield single. Medium, athletic frame w/ lean strength, projectable. Offensively, hits from an open, very slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into short toe tap to square and proper load. Swing was all upper body on this day, lower half was along for the ride. Shows knack for contact, wants to hit gaps and use above average speed underway to leg out extra bases. Was not tested defensively.

Carson Rees OF / 1B / Collierville, TN / 2018

Uncommitted OF picked up a single and sac fly in his 2 at bats, hitting in the 3 spot. Medium, athletic frame w/ present strength, some physical projection. Unique stance setup, wide w/ weight on his front leg, slightly closed, crouched stance. Shift of weight, knee to knee leg kick and short load. Lot of moving parts. Pull oriented approach, frame suggests power is coming. Was not tested in the OF.

Cannon Whitby SS / RHP / Collierville, TN / 2018

Uncommitted 3B is a transfer from Illinois who picked up a base hit. Medium, athletic frame w/ some present strength, some physical projection. Unique stance, hits w/ an open, slightly crouched stance w/ hands located even with his belt w/ short hand rhythm into leg kick to square w/ hands getting into the proper position. Lot of movement. Up the middle approach w/ feel for the barrel, lacing both his hit and his sac fly. Generates bat speed through the zone w/ some loft. Projects for pull HR power. Was not tested defensively.

Collierville Pitchers

Zachary Jackson RHP / 1B / Collierville, TN / 2019

FB (83-86), CB (72-76)

Physical righty showed super quick arm w/ flashes of an above average breaking ball. Tall, athletic frame w/ present lower half strength, very projectable. Pitches from a full wind-up and over the top release. Repeats w/ super quick arm. Straight FB flashes short arm side run. Tight slurve flashes above average w/ late bite, above average depth. Will show true CB shape at times, lateral movement at other times. Pounded the zone, more control than command. Projects to command. Generated 5 swing and misses on 13 swings.

Gabriel Nicholson LHP / Collierville, TN / 2019

FB (79-80, T81, 82), CB (65-68), CH (70-73)

Finesse lefty showed feel for 3 distinct pitches. Medium, athletic frame w/ some lean strength, projectable. Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ to ¾ release. Quick arm, should have a velo jump coming this calendar year. Will vary timing within his delivery to help mess with hitters timing. Subtle timing adjustments. Upright finish. FB shows arm side run. Big downer CB w/ proper rotation, shape. Late bite w/ above average depth. CH w/ fade, slows arm down slightly at times. Strike thrower flashes ability to pitch w/ intent, feel for pitching w/ FB to both corners, get me over vs. buried CB. Generated 8 swing and misses on 20 swings.

Evangelical Christian School Hitters

Evan Crenshaw 2B / RHP / Evangelical Christian School, TN / 2018

Southwest Tennessee commit shows projectable frame. Medium, athletic frame, long and lanky w/ lean strength. Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, upright stance w/ hand rhythm into stride and load. Generates bat speed through the zone. Pull oriented approach w/ hips leaking. Projectable pull power. Struggled with timing on these 2 games, but tools are there to hit. Also pitched, working 78-80 w/ his FB while mixing in a tight 71-72 breaking ball.

Austin Hill 3B / RHP / Evangelical Christian School, TN / 2020

Young corner infielder showed intriguing tools, including making a couple barehanded plays at 3B on Tuesday. Medium, sturdy build w/ present strength, some physical projection. Strong kid. Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, wide, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into shift of weight, straightening up out of the crouch and a short stride where foot lands in same spot. Generates bat speed through the zone w/ loft. Projectable pull power. Defensively, showed average arm strength w/ athleticism, played both corner infield spots. Also pitched, working 77-79.

Dawson Williams SS / Evangelical Christian School, TN / 2019

Athletic infielder showed athletic frame, projectable tools. Tall, athletic frame w/ lean strength, physical projection. Hits from a straight on, very slightly crouched stance w/ lot of hand rhythm into shift of weight, stride and power load w/ slight bat wrap. Generates bat speed. Pull oriented approach. Working on keeping upper and lower half in sync, repeating the same swing. Above average runner glides on the bases. Was not tested defensively.

Evangelical Christian School Pitchers

Colin Jones LHP / Evangelical Christian School, TN / 2018

FB (79-81, T82), SL (70-72)

Navy commit struck out the side fresh off of the flu. Tall, athletic frame w/ lean strength, tons of projection. Pitches from a full wind-up w/ low ¾ release. Loose, quick arm. Repeats low effort delivery. FB w/ bore. ¾ tilt sweeping SL w/ above average lateral movement, cuts across the plate from his slot. Strike thrower flashed ability to pitch w/ intent. Projects to command. Generated 3 swing and misses on 4 pitches.
