Game Report: Lausanne @ Memphis University School

Tim Kay
PBR Tennessee Director of Scouting

On Monday, Lausanne traveled to Memphis University School to play a varsity and jv doubleheader.  This was a cloudy day w/ a heavy wind.  Here is a look at some standouts (check out the Twitter feed for some video highlights – wind affected the CF angle, shifting it to the side.  Some pitchers were more affected than others):

Lausanne Hitters

Chad Partee 3B / Lausanne, TN / 2019

Uncommitted 3B picked up 2 hits on the day, including a double.  Tall, lean, athletic frame w/ lean strength.  Projectable.  Hits from a straight on, upright stance w/ bat waggle into stride and load where hands drop even w/ stomach.  Proper bat path w/ feel for barrel.  Line drive approach w/ gap power.  Was not tested defensively.

Bradley Bruckman SS / RHP / Lausanne, TN / 2019

Uncommitted SS picked up a single while showing zero swing and miss on 5 swings.  Medium, athletic frame w/ lean strength, projectable.  Offensively, hits from a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ short leg kick and proper load.  Quick to the ball w/ barrel feel.  Singles hitter wants to hit gaps.  Defensively, made all the plays w/ soft hands, solid feet.

Lausanne Pitchers

Whit Overstreet RHP / C / Lausanne, TN / 2020

FB (79-81, T82), CB (66-68), CH (73)

Uncommitted RHP shows intriguing 3 pitch mix w/ projection.  Medium, athletic frame w/ lean strength.  High-waisted, projectable.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ release.  Can get down the slope too quickly, causing arm to lag behind and missing to his arm-side.  Quick arm.  FB shows arm-side run.  Medium downer CB flashed proper shape/rotation.  CH showed late diving action, moved like a splitter.  Only threw once.  Around the zone, projects to command as he gets his arm on time more consistently.  3 swing and misses on 11 swings.

Memphis University School Hitters

John Bolton SS / 2B / Memphis University School, TN / 2018

Uncommitted SS showed above average defensive tools, projects to stay in the middle of the field.  Medium, athletic frame w/ some physicality in the lower half, some projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly crouched, straight on stance w/ bat waggle into shift of weight w/ proper stride and load.  Up the middle approach w/ gap power.  Generates bat speed through the zone.  Defensively, made all the plays w/ range up the middle.  Soft hands, feet work in tandem.  Internal clock, knew which baserunners he needed to be quick and which he had time to gather.  Above average arm strength w/ carry through the target.

Maurice Hampton OF / Memphis University School, TN / 2019

LSU commit.  Showed his big bat speed and plus run tool underway.  Physical, athletic frame w/ lot of present strength, some projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, slightly crouched stance into shift of weight w/ proper stride and load.  Can get lower half more involved.  Repeatable swing.  Generates premium bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Projects to hit for average and power.  Plus runner underway, glides on the bases.  Was not tested in the OF.

Jeffrey Ince SS / 2B / Memphis University School, TN / 2021

Mississippi State commit.  Showed patient approach w/ intriguing tools in a 2021.  Medium, athletic frame w/ lot of projection.  Switch hitter hit only from the left side on this day.  Straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ controlled hand rhythm into proper stride and load.  Quiet at the plate.  Generates bat speed through the zone.  Short to the ball w/ proper bat path.  Present gap power, projects for pull HR power as frame develops.  Plus runner ran a 4.28 from the left side w/ slight corkscrew in the box.  Was not tested defensively.

Jacob Messer OF / Memphis University, TN / 2020

Uncommitted OF swung the bat just 3 times and picked up 3 hits.  Medium, athletic frame w/ lean strength, projection.  Hits from a straight on, slightly crouched stance into shift of weight, short stride and load.  Proper bat path.  All fields approach.  Wants to hit gaps and use his above average run speed to leg out extra base hits.  Was not tested defensively.

Memphis University School Pitchers

Conner Hobbs RHP / 1B / Memphis University School, TN / 2018

FB (77-81, T82), DDFB (76-78), CH (61-64)

Southwest Tennessee commit struck out 2 in 2 innings.  Prototypical pitcher build w/ physical lower half, some projection remaining.  Pitches from a full wind-up from different arm-slots.  Mix and match righty wants to change eye level, never the same release point twice.  FB shows downhill plane to arm side run depending on the release point.  Mixed in a CH where he slowed his body down, trusting the change in speed to get the hitter out.  Around the zone, developing ability to pitch w/ intent.  5 swing and misses on 13 swings.

Jesse Homan RHP / OF / Memphis University School, TN / 2018

FB (82-85), CH (69-70)

Uncommitted RHP impressed w/ projectable frame, quick arm.  Prototypical pitcher build w/ long and lanky frame, projection.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ release.  Repeats w/ quick, loose arm, extension, downhill plane.  Straight FB.  Mixed in CH w/ sink, slows body and arm slightly.  Around the zone, projects to command w/ repeatable delivery.  7 swing and misses on 13 swings.

John Ross Swaim LHP / OF / Memphis University School, TN / 2018

FB (77-79), CH (75)

Uncommitted LHP showed a 6 mile per hour jump from the summer, where he pitched 70-73.  Medium, athletic frame w/ projection, lean strength.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ release.  FB shows short arm-side run.  Mixed in firm straight CH.  Around the zone, projects to command FB.  5 swing and misses on 12 swings.
