The 2021 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. That excitement may be at an all-time high entering this high school season as the 2020 high school baseball season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season during an offseason unlike any other and as always, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at the TSSAA Spring Fling state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams.

We start diving into the Preseason Power 25 Rankings, highlighting some of the deepest clubs across the state. Although we could have done 40+ clubs with so many talented teams getting tuned up for the 2021 season, we can only rank 25 and this list will continue to change as the season plays out on the field.  There will be teams not on the list that will be battling for a state championship come late May, so take it for what it's worth, as no championships have ever been won on paper.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

The Purple Wave are no strangers to playing in Murfreesboro in late May with state titles in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016. They came up on game short in their last trip in 2019, and they lost some talented arms from their 2020 team that raced out to an 8-0 start before the season was canned.  They'll return a younger squad, but should have the talent to be in the mix coming out of the West region.  Soph. switch hitting C/UTL Trenton Lyons (Ole Miss commit) will be an anchor behind the dish and can handle the barrel from both sides of the plate. His versatility can allow him to play all over the field while continuing to build upon his offensive prowess.  Uncommitted senior OF/RHP Dylan Bowers will look to make some noise and secure a college spot this Spring, as a strong dual-sport athlete. I'd anticipate the biggest riser being '23 RHP Anthony Scarpino, the 6-foot-4 righty will fill the spots of graduating seniors with a mid 80s FB and two above average secondary pitches.  He certainly looks the part, and come Spring time expectations will be rising as he looks to put together a strong sophomore campaign.  '22 RHP/1B John Webb showcased some good pop and can provide some quality time on the mound.  '22 INF William Gossett put together a well rounded showing this preseason with good hands and footwork while flashing some offensive upside.  '23 C James Saxon is very solid and should slot in behind the dish if/when Lyons is handling defensive duty up the middle.  The Purple Wave are a touch inexperienced with missing time last year, but they have a championship competitor prestige and should grow into form as the season unfolds.

Best of luck this season!
