TN: JUCO: Columbia State Intersquad

Tim Kay
PBR Tennessee Director of Scouting

On Wednesday, Columbia State held a controlled intersquad with heavy coaching and situation-based instruction, with all pitchers pitching from the stretch.  We were on hand to get a look at the returning players and the incoming freshman.  Below are notes on select players (check out the Twitter feed for some video highlights!):

JUSTIN CARLIN / 3B / OF / EAST LIMESTONE, AL / 2017

2-3, 2 2B

Sophomore corner infielder had the best BP of any hitter, as the ball makes a different sound off of his bat and followed that up with 2 doubles in game, including off the very top of the wall in CF (384).  6’0, 180-pounder features a medium, athletic frame w/ well-proportioned present strength, some upper half projection.  Offensively, hits w/ an open, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into short shift of weight, leg kick to square and proper load.  Generates easy bat speed through the zone.  Knack for contact, takes a 2-strike approach w/ bat resting on his shoulder and shorter leg kick.  Understands how to use his body to generate bat speed.  Up the middle approach w/ lot of line drives.  Barrel feel.  Present power with ability to drive the baseball to all fields.  Defensively, shows soft hands w/ good footwork and easy actions at 3B w/ arm strength to stay on the left side of the infield.
