Top Prospect Games Spotlight: Central 2018 1B Bass Cooper

By Matt Byrd
Director of Scouting

We continue to take a look at players who will be participating in the PBR Tennessee Top Prospect Games at the University of Tennessee on June 9-10. The event affords players the opportunity to showcase their abilities in a combination showcase/game play event and will feature some of the top uncommitted Class of 2016 and 2017 players in the state.

Bass Cooper attended our East Tennessee College Prospect Showcase and caught our eye with his cooperperformance. Cooper, a Class of 2018 1B/3B from Knoxville Central HS , has advanced skills from both sides of the plate. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound prospect hit .412 with five doubles in the three-hole for the Bobcats this spring and should continue to develop into a switch-hitting power threat, a rarity at the high school level. Below is a look at Cooper’s scouting report from that January event.

1/17/15- The 6 foot 3, 175-pound prospect showed very good projectability with a big, athletic build and room to add to his frame, exit velocity off the tee was 89 mph, ran a 4.69 home to first base time, the switch hitter hits from an open stance, has a slight leg kick, smooth load and good balance, generates good bat speed, will develop into a power type hitter, hits well from both sides of the plate, very advanced hitter for his age. Position velocity across the infield was 74 mph, has soft hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange, big time prospect to keep an eye on as he should develop into a power threat from both sides of the plate.

Cooper, currently one of the top players in Tennessee’s 2018 class, will participate at 1B at the Top Prospect Games event.
