By Matt Byrd
Tennessee Director of Scouting

The PBR Tennessee unsigned senior showcase took place last Sunday at Maryville College and afforded Class of 2015 players still looking to play at the next level the opportunity to showcase their abilities to our staff and numerous college coaches.

Earlier this week we posted the top statistical performers and complete stats for all players from the event. CLICK HERE to view that article.

The following is analysis of the pitchers from the event.

Justin Coleman, 2015, Maryville High, RHP
The 6-foot-1, 173 pound RHP has a solid delivery and does a good job using lower half during his drive to the plate. Works through a high-3/4 slot and showed a fastball ranging 85-86 mph throughout his bullpen. Fastball gets on hitters quick with occasional run. Curveball sat 65-67mph with a very quick, sharp 12/6 break. Changeup was also on display with late fade and sink as it reached the plate. Good velocity difference on the changeup at 72-74 mph.

Kyle Klotz, 2015, Creek Wood High, RHP
The 6-foot, 210 pound righty has a strong build,  releases from a low ¾ to at times sidearm slot, fastball sat 82-83 mph, topping at 85 on one occasion with late arm-side life. Curveball ranged from 74-75 mph with an 11/5 break. Likes to throw curveball from a higher arm slot. Changeup sat 71-72 mph with gradual arm-side run. Changeup could be very effective to hitters due to release of the pitch resembling the fastball with a 10 mph velocity difference, interesting prospect with multiple arm slots.

Ty Curtis, 2015, Dekalb County High, RHP
The 6-foot-4, 175 pound, lanky built righty shows an up tempo delivery to the plate and works through a high-3/4 slot. Throws a fastball sitting at 80-81 mph topping out at 83 on one occasion with some arm-side run. Fastball seems to get on hitters quick with fast delivery. Curveball ranged from 66-68 mph with a tight spin and quick/late 11/5 break to the plate. Spots up very well with changeup sitting from 72-73mph with good sink and fading action when it reaches the plate.

Kaleb Qualls, 2015, Livingston Academy, RHP
5-foot-10, 155 pound righty with an athletic frame. Throwing from a ¾ arm slot, his fastball sat at 77-79 mph and topped out at 80 on one occasion with some arm-side run. Curveball ranged from 64-66 mph at an 11/5 trajectory with gradual movement. His changeup showed to be very effective sitting at 70-71 with some arm-side run like his fastball. Changeup does a great job mirroring his fastball thrown with good arm action.

Jack Starnes, 2015, Morristown West High, RHP
The 5-foot-10, 180 pound athletic righty shows a full over the top delivery. His fastball sat 78-79 mph. Fastball tends to stay straight with minimal run. Curveball was clocked at 62-63 mph on a 12/6 trajectory with long/slow break. Changeup was sitting at 70-72mph with gradual fade as it reached the hitter’s zone.

Gage Seymour, 2015, Fulton High, RHP
The 6-foot, 180 pound righty has a strong, athletically built frame. Throwing from a ¾ arm slot, Seymour’s fastball was clocked at 74-75mph, topping out at 76mph with occasional run. Curveball was more of a sweeping action at a 10/4 trajectory sitting at 66-68 mph. His cutter showed gradual movement sitting at 67mph. Changeup was clocked at 70-72mph with occasional gradual fading action.

Jorden Averette, 2015, Butler Traditional, RHP
The 6-foot-1, 180 pound lanky righty shows a quick arm action through a high-3/4 slot. Fastball was clocked at 77-79mph topping out at 80mph. Shows a quick, short arm delivery when releasing his pitches. Fastball appears to have sinking action when it reaches the hitters plane. Curveball sat at 67-68mph with a tight 11/5 breaking action. Slider sitting at 71-73mph with gradual lateral break, changeup sitting at 67-68mph and showed good mirroring of the fastball.

Turner Hobbs, 2015, Lenoir City High, LHP
6-foot-3, 175 pound LHP, crafty lefty had good command of all his arsenal of pitches. Fastball sat at 71-72 mph, topping out at 73 mph with good arm-side run. Showed repeatable mechanics along with good command of his pitches. Showed a slow 1/7 long breaking curveball that sat at 64-66 mph. Slider at 70-71mph with gradual movement and changeup at 70-71mph. Both slider and curveball mirror each other both in delivery and action. Pitches could be very effective when used together.

Robert Hughes, 2015, Hendersonville Christian Academy, RHP
The big 6-foot-3, 225 pound  RHP shows a long arm action but quick delivery to the plate especially from the stretch. Throws through an over-the-top arm slot. Fastball was sitting at 74-75 mph topping out at 76 mph. Fastball showed occasional arm-side run, spotted up well with the fastball. Curveball sat 67-68 mph with a 12/6 late break with moderate movement. Splitter ranged from 68-70mph, showed decent downward movement and delivered just like the fastball and changeup.  Changeup at 70-72mph with late downward movement.

The big 5-foot-11, 228 RHP showed a straight fastball sitting at 73-75 mph, topping out at 75 mph with flat movement. Throws a slow, breaking 12/6 curveball at 59-61mph. Splitter seems to be his best pitch at 61-63 mph with a nice downward late break when it reaches the hitter’s contact zone.
