It’s no secret that having a player that can pitch and play a position well can only be a bonus for any team. Father Ryan High School has that luxury in LHP/OF Andrew O’Dwyer.
At 5-foot-11, 185-pounds, O’Dwyer has an athletic and strong frame, and he impressed both on the mound and as an outfielder at last Saturday’s Preseason All-State Showcase.
In a display of his athleticism, O’Dwyer began his day by running a 6.90 60-yard dash, but that was just the beginning of his performance.
During Defensive drills, O’Dwyer showed soft hands and fluid footwork with athletic actions. He plays through the baseball well, and his biggest strength defensively was his arm, with throws that registered on the radar gun at 85 mph. Offensively, the right-handed hitter has an aggressive approach at the plate and showed strength and bat speed during his round of batting practice. His 93 mph exit velocity tied for second best at the event, and in addition to making hard line drive contact, O’Dwyer showed flashes of pull-side power with the ball jumping off his bat.
On the mound , O’Dwyer had an impressive showing with his fastball sitting consistently 82-84 mph, topping at 85. His 68-70 mph curveball showed gradual, lateral action early in his bullpen, but he had better feel for it as the bullpen progressed and it showed sharper 1/7 action with some depth the more he threw it. He also showed the ability to throw his 75-76 mph changeup for strikes. O’Dwyer has a tendency to work fast and get in a good rhythm on the mound.
Look for O’Dwyer to play a key role in Father Ryan’s success this season, both on the mound and as a position player.
