A perfect night for baseball saw Chantilly host Osbourn Park in the first round of the Region 6D tournament. The game was tight most of the way until the Chargers scored three in the bottom of the sixth to pull away and advance to the quarterfinals with a 6-2 win.

Both starters got out of the gate well. Chantilly junior Dylan Siesky allowed a single in each of the first two innings but no damage. Osbourn Park sophomore Cameron Mozingo-Morales allowed two runners in the first and a runner in the second, but also got through the first two innings unscathed.

After Siesky worked another scoreless inning in the top of the third, singles by Ryan Hodinko and Siesky put two on with no out in the bottom of the third for the Chargers. After bunting the runners into scoring position, Connor Pennell drove in the game’s first run with a sac fly to center. An error allowed a second Chantilly run to score and after three, the Chargers led 2-0.

Siesky got two quick outs in the top of the fourth before singles by Mario Duarte, Jack Braley, and Mozingo-Morales, with the third hit driving in the Yellow Jackets’ first run and cutting the score to 2-1. After a walk loaded the bases, Chantilly went to the bullpen for junior Nicholas Zampiello, who struck out Shane Saunders to end the threat. The Chargers went scoreless in the bottom of the fourth and after four, Chantilly led 2-1.

Zampiello fired the game’s first perfect frame in the top of the fifth, striking out two. Osbourn Park went to the bullpen for senior Cameron Slykhuis, who was welcomed to the game by Ryan Hodinko’s second base hit of the game. Slykhuis appeared to be out of the inning, but a dropped fly ball in the outfield that would have been the third out allowed the Chargers to extend their lead to 3-1 after five.

In the top of the sixth, Zampiello hit the leadoff man and he eventually stole second. Braley delivered and RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2. Braley was then caught stealing when he broke before the pitch was thrown and Zampiello stepped off and started a rundown. The Yellow Jackets would put two more runners on but Zampiello again got Saunders to end the inning with the 3-2 lead intact.

In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Liam Gannon came into pitch and a leadoff single by Christian Parana was followed by an error on a sacrifice attempt, putting runners on the corners for Chantilly. Osbourn Park got an out without a run scoring on a fielder’s choice, but Joey Imperato delivered the big blow with a two-run double to left, extending the lead to 5-2. Ryan Hodinko would pick up his third hit, driving in Imperato and extending the lead to 6-2. Zampiello threw a perfect seventh and the Chargers advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2 win.

For Osbourn Park, Mozingo-Morales was the losing pitcher with 4 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 1 BB, 2 K while also going 2-3 with an RBI at the plate. Braley was 2-3 with an RBI as well.

For Chantilly, Siesky went 3.2 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 1 K while also going 2-4 with a 2B at the plate. Zampiello went 3.1 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 7 K to earn the win. Ryan Hodinko was 3-4 with an RBI and Imperato was 2-3 with a 2B and 2 RBIs.
