Gabe Schilke commits to the Naval Academy

2014 Top Prospect Games participant and Colonial Forge High School catcher Gabe Schilke has verbally committed to attend the United States Naval Academy in the fall of 2016. Schilke is the second current Colonial Forge player that is bound for college baseball, joining senior outfielder Shawn Nickles (Concord). The Eagles are coming off of a good regular season 2014, when they went 16-7 before getting upset in the Conference tournament by Stafford High School. The Eagles were a young team last year and look to build on that strong regular season and make a deep run in the 6A South this year.
Schilke is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound athletic catcher that hits from a balanced stance. He has a smooth load back with minimal movement and rhythm. He has a small stride and good balance and is very short to the baseball with a line drive approach to the middle of the field. Behind the plate, Schilke throws from a high three-quarter arm slot and hit 75 mph on his throw downs. He comes out of his crouch well, gaining ground towards second, and utilizes his arm strength more than quickness. His pop times at the Top Prospect Games were between 2.01 and 2.15.
When he arrives at the Naval Academy, Schilke figures to immediately be able to contribute to the Midshipmen as a defensive replacement late in games and a bat off of the bench. Over the course of his career, Schilke has the ability to develop into a good defensive catcher that controls the running game and hit for a high average and with some gap power.
