The Liberty Christian Bulldogs used a five run fifth inning to take the lead and then hold on in a 5-4 victory over Miller School Mavericks in an early season matchup of top programs in the state.
The game looked to be a pitchers duel at the beginning with Maverick starter 2018 RHP Ethan Murray (Duke) and LCA's 2018 RHP Austin Roach keeping run off the board the first two innings. That would change in the third as Miller struck first scoring two runs in bottom of the third off a two out single from C Adam Hackenburg (Clemson).
Murray was effective in his start for the Mustangs, keeping the Bulldogs at bay highlighted by back-to-back strikeouts with one out and the bases loaded in the top of third. Things began to change in the fifth after Murray's day ended after two walks in the fifth and one out. The Maverick bullpen would load the bases with a walk, then LCA's first run would score after a hit-by-pitch. LCA's 1B Pearce Howard smacked a two-run double immediately followed by a Hunter Johnson two RBI single quickly making the score 5-2 LCA.
The Mavericks would answer in the bottom half of the fifth with two runs of their own, but could muster no more as LCA would hold on to the early season victory.
LCA improved to 2-0 with the win while Miller drops to 0-4 with a very competitive schedule to start the season.
