Pre-Summer Trials Pitcher Analysis: Part 2

In late May, PBR VA/DC hosted the Pre-Summer Trials at Virginia Sports Complex, featuring over 60 players from all corners of our coverage area. Over the next week, we will post the scouting reports on that event as we add them to each player's profile. Here is the second chunk of pitchers, in alphabetical order:

Braden Homesley, 1B/RHP, Riverside, 2018
Homesley stands an athletic 6-2. Throws from an over the top slot with a smooth tall and fall delivery. Long arm action generates velocity with easy effort. Shoulders are closed and stride is on line to a square landing. Fastball had some run, sitting 70-72, touching 74. Gradual curveball with 11/5 break and decent armspeed, thrown for strikes at 61-63. Fading change-up with decent armspeed thrown for strikes at 61.

Hunter Hoopes, OF/RHP, W.T. Woodson, 2018
Hoopes stands a lanky 6-0 tall with a projectable frame. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Long, loose arm action that is quick and generates velocity with normal effort. Shoulders are level and closed and he lands closed before an athletic finish. Fastball had late run, sitting 81-82 and touching 84. Sharp 11/5 curveball that he slowed his arm a bit on, running 62-63. Good armspeed on a change-up that ran and was 70-73.

Brendan Houghtaling, RHP, Trinity Episcopal, 2018
Houghtaling stands 5-11 with a lanky frame. Drop and drive delivery with a short arm action that generates velocity with normal effort. Shoulders are uphill and he strides out on line to a square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball had slight run and was thrown for strikes at 73-74. Gradual 12/6 curveball with good armspeed, running 59-62. Fading change-up with full armspeed at 67. Commanded his offspeed well down.

Brendan Keating, RHP/1B, James Madison, 2018
Keating stands a lanky 6-5. The throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a tall and fall delivery. Long arm action generates velocity with regular effort. Shoulders are uphill as he strides out on line to a square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball was 77-80 with slight run. Curveball had early 11/5 break, running 58-62. Fading change-up was 65-66.

John Killmon, C/RHP, Nandua, 2018
Killmon stands 6-0 tall with an athletic frame. Throws from an over the top slot with a short arm action and a tall and fall delivery. Easy effort, shoulders are level and he stays on line to a square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball was 75-76. 11/5 downer curveball ball with gradual break at 63. Good armspeed on change-up that was 70.

Matthew Kleinfelter, RHP/3B, Lancaster, 2019
Kleinfelter stands 6-1 and has a strong athletic frame. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a long, loose arm action that is quick, generating velocity with some effort. Shoulders are level, stays on line to a square landing with a slight fall off finish. Fastball had hard run, sitting 84-86. Slowed arm a bit on curveball, which had gradual 11/5 break at 64-67. Slowed arm a bit on fading change-up that was 73.

Hampton McClellan, RHP, James River, 2017
McClellan stands 6-3 and has a lanky, athletic frame. Throws from an over the top slot with a short arm action that is quick. Generates velocity with some effort. Shoulders are downhill as he strides online to a square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball had slight sink, running 84-85, sitting 86. Sharp 10/4 slider with good armspeed, running 69-70. Change-up thrown with good armspeed, running 79.

Connor Miller, SS/RHP, Loudoun Valley, 2018
Miller stands 5-10 and has a lanky frame. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action and some effort. Drop and drive delivery with level, closed shoulders. Strides out on line to a square landing with a fall off finish. Fastball had slight run, sitting 76-79. 11/5 curveball with gradual break and good armspeed running 62-65. Good armspeed on a fading change-up that he threw for strikes, sitting 69-71.

Trent Miller, RHP/3B, Covenant School, 2017
Miller is 6-4 and has a lanky frame. He throws from a three-quarters slot with a drop and drive delivery. Quick arm with a short, loose arm action and normal effort. Shoulders are slightly uphill and closed and he strides out to a slightly closed landing with a slight fall off finish. Fastball had some run to it, sitting 78-82. 12/6 curveball with decent armspeed and late, gradual break running 69-73. Fading change-up was 74-77. Delivery creates deception.

Connor Moriarty, SS/RHP, Albemarle, 2018
Moriarty has a lanky 5-10 frame. Throws from an over the top slot with a tall and fall delivery. Long arm action that generates velocity with normal effort. Shoulders are level and he strides out on line to a square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball was 69-72. Gradual 11/5 curveball with good armspeed that was thrown for strikes, running 59-62. Good armspeed on change-up that ran 68.

Derrick Newman, 3B/RHP, Bishop O’Connell, 2018
Newman is 5-8 and has a strong, athletic frame. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Long arm action with normal effort. Shoulders are uphill and he stays on line to a square landing and an athletic finish. Fastball has plane and slight cut, sat 76-77. Curveball has gradual 12/6 break and decent armspeed, running 67-69. Pitch should sharpen as he develops. Fading change-up with decent armspeed, 67-69.
