On Sunday, February 22, Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC hosted its second event of 2015, the Preseason All-State, for members of the 2016 graduating class. Over 80 players showcased their skills for PBR staff at Virginia Sports Complex in Ruther Glen, Virginia. All of these players will be eligible to receive an invite to the Super 60, which is the premier professional scouting event for high school baseball players. The Super 60 is held annually in Chicago, Ill. on Super Bowl Sunday prior to their senior season. Here are the best from the event...Here is our analysis of half of the pitchers from the event. Brett Kreyer, LHP, Stone Bridge, 2016
2/22/2015-Kreyer stands 6-foot with a strong lower half. He has a quick, drop and drive delivery and throws from a high three-quarters slot. His arm action is short and he has a quick armstroke, generating velocity with some effort. His shoulders are uphill and closed and he strides out on line to a square landing before falling off and recoiling as he finishes. Kreyer’s fastball sat 79-81 with hard run to it. His 12/6 curveball had late breaking action with full armspeed and came in 61-62. He also showed a tight, late breaking 2/8 slider that sat 66-68. He also threw a fading change-up with good armspeed that ran 65-69. Kreyer had outstanding command of all of his pitches.
Oliver Methven, RHP/OF, Trinity Episcopal, 2016
2/22/2015-Methven stands 6-foot-1 and has a lanky frame. He has a tall and fall delivery and throws from an over-the-top arm slot. His backside arm action is long and stiff and he generates velocity with normal effort. His shoulders are uphill and closed and he strides out closed before landing square and falling off a bit as he finishes. Methven’s fastball had slight running action to it that he commanded well, running 71-73 and touching 74. He threw a 11/5 breaking curveball with decent armspeed that he worked down with, running 62-64. He threw a cutting change-up with decent armspeed that was choked a bit and he kept down, running 68-70.
Logan Nesson, RHP/MIF, George Mason, 2016
2/22/2015-Nesson stands 5-foot-11 and has an athletic frame. He has a drop and drive delivery and throws from an over the top slot. He has a short, loose arm action and pitches with easy effort. His shoulders are level and he strides on line to his target, landing square and coming to an athletic finish. Nesson’s fastball had slight run to it and sat 76-77. He threw a tight 11/5 slider with good armspeed that ran 69-72. His change-up was thrown with full armspeed and had sinking action to it and ran 74-76. Nesson had good command of all of his pitches and worked down in the zone with his fastball and change-up.
Matt Nickles, RHP, Colonial Forge, 2016
2/22/2015-Nickles stands 6-foot-0 tall and has an athletic frame with strong legs. He has an explosive drop and drive delivery and throws from a high three-quarters slot. He has a long, loose arm action and a lightning quick armstroke that generates velocity with some effort. His shoulders are level as he strides out on line to a square landing before he comes to an athletic finish. Nickles’ fastball sat 84-86, touching 87 and he commanded it at the top of the strike zone. He threw a sharp 12/6 curveball with full armspeed that was commanded well and ran 61-65. He threw and outstanding change-up with full armspeed and armside run to it that sat 71-73 and was commanded well.
Banks Northington, 1B/RHP, Charlottesville, 2016
2/22/2015-Northington stands 6-foot-2 with an athletic frame. He has a smooth, tall and fall delivery and throws from an over-the-top slot. He has a short, free, arm action and a quick armstroke that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are uphill and he strides out on line before landing a bit open and coming to an athletic finish. Northington’s fastball sat 77 with slight sink and good downward plane. His curveball had gradual 12/6 break to it and ran 66-68. He also threw a fading change-up with decent armspeed that ran 65-71. Overall, his command was good and he worked down in the zone.
Joshua Paynter, IF/RHP, Lunenberg Central, 2016
2/22/2015-Paynter stands 5-foot-10 and has a strong, athletic frame. He has a tall and fall delivery and throws from a high three-quarters slot. He has a late hand break and a short arm action that generates velocity with some effort. His shoulders are uphill and he strides out on line before landing a bit open and falling off as he finishes. Paynter’s fastball sat 73-74, touching 75, with slight cutting action to it. He threw a gradual 12/6 breaking curveball with decent armspeed that ran 62-64 that he kept down. He kept his change-up down and threw it with armside run in the 65-67 range.
Robert Riddick, RHP/1B, Paul VI Catholic, 2016
2/22/2015-Riddick stands an athletic 6-foot-5. He throws from a high three-quarters slot with a slight drop and drive delivery. He has a long backside arm action with a bit of a wrap to it and a quick armstroke that generates velocity with some effort. He gets to a good, high balance point and strides out on line, landing square before falling off a bit after release. His shoulders are uphill at power position. Riddick’s fastball sat 84-86 with hard run to it. His slider had sharp 11/5 break with decent armspeed and ran 73-75. His change-up faded with decent armspeed, running 75-81. He had outstanding command of all three pitches.
Graham Seitz, RHP/1B, Herndon, 2016
2/22/2015-Seitz stands 6-foot-3 and has an athletic frame. He has a smooth tilt and topple delivery and throws from a low three-quarters slot. His arm action is long and loose and he has a lightning quick armstroke that allows him to generate easy velocity. His shoulders are level and closed and he strides out on line to a square landing before falling off as he finishes. Seitz’s fastball had heavy sink to it that he commanded well, sitting 84-85 and topping out at 87. He also threw a sharp, late, 10/4 slider with full armspeed that sat 73-75. His change-up had armside run and he threw it with decent armspeed in the 77-79 range.
Fox Semones, MIF/RHP, C.D. Hylton, 2016
2/22/2015-Semones stands 5-foot-11 and has an athletic frame that is a bit lanky. He has smooth, drop and drive mechanics and throws from a high three-quarters slot. He has a long, loose arm action and a lighting fast armstroke that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are uphill and closed as he strides on line to a slightly open landing before coming to an athletic finish. Semones’ fastball ran 83-85 with hard run on it. He threw a sharp, 10/4 slider with full armspeed that ran 70-73. He also threw a fading change-up with full armspeed that ran 69-72. Semones had outstanding command of all three pitches.
Joe Sfreddo, LHP, John Paul the Great Catholic, 2016
2/22/2015-Sfreddo stands 6-foot-7 and has a lanky frame. He has a choppy drop and drive delivery and throws from a high three-quarters slot. He has a short, stiff arm action that generates velocity with normal effort. His shoulders are level and closed off as he strides out down the first base side before landing closed and falling forward as he finishes. Sfreddo’s fastball had slight cut to it and ran 71-74 and was commanded well. His curveball had gradual 1/7 action, running 51-61. His change-up was thrown with decent armspeed and had some sink and cut to it, sitting 59-63. He also threw a slider that had 2/8 action and came in at 63.
Trey Shepard, RHP, C.D. Hylton, 2016
2/22/2015-Shepard stands 6-foot-0 tall and has an athletic frame.He has a smooth tall and fall delivery and throws from a high three-quarters slot. His arm action is long and loose and he has a lightning quick arm that generates velocity with easy effort. His shoulders are uphill and closed as he strides out on line to a square landing and a slight fall off as he finishes. Shepard’s fastball has late heavy run when thrown to armside and he sat 86-89 at the top of the zone with the pitch. His curveball has power 11/5 action that ran 70-72. He also threw a late, tight, 10/4 breaking slider that sat 73-76.
Garrett Stallings, RHP, Grassfield, 2016
2/22/2015-Stallings stands 6-foot-2 and has an athletic frame with strong legs. He has a smooth, tall and fall delivery and throws from a high three-quarters slot. He has a short, loose arm action and generates easy velocity with a lightning quick armstroke. His shoulders are uphill and closed as he strides out online, landing square, and falling off a bit after release. Stallings’ fastball sat 87-88, touching 89 with late run to it. He threw a late breaking, 12/6 curveball that ran 69-74. He also threw a slider with full armspeed that had late, sharp 10/4 break and ran 79-82. His change-up faded and was thrown with decent armspeed in the 74-77 range. Stallings’ command of all four pitches was elite.
Michael Taylor, LHP/1B, Osbourn, 2016
2/22/2015-Taylor has an athletic 6-foot-2 frame. He has a drop and drive delivery and throws from a three-quarters slot. He has a long, loose arm action and generates easy velocity with a quick armstroke. His shoulders are level and closed and he strides out on line before landing a bit open and falling off after release. Taylor’s fastball sat 83-85, touching 86, with late run to it. His slider had late 10/4 action and was thrown with full armspeed, running 76-78. His change-up had fading action and was thrown with full armspeed, sitting 77-79. Taylor had outstanding command of all three pitches.
Jaret West, LHP/OF, Menchville, 2016
2/22/2015-West stands 5-foot-9 and has an athletic frame with a strong lower half. He has some rhythm to his tall and fall delivery and throws from a low three-quarters arm slot. He has a long, stiff arm action and has a quick armstroke that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are level and he strides out on line before landing square and falling off after release. West commanded his sinking fastball down in the zone, sitting 76-77. He threw a gradual, 2/8 breaking slider with decent armspeed that ran 64-65. He also threw a fading change-up with decent armspeed that he commanded well at the bottom of the zone and ran 71-73.
Michael Zubovich, RHP, Freedom (South Riding), 2016
2/22/2015-Zubovich stands 6-foot-1 and has a lanky frame. He has a smooth tilt and topple delivery and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot. He has a long, loose arm action and a quick armstroke that generates easy velocity. His shoulders are uphill and he strides out on line before landing a bit open and coming to an athletic finish. Zubovich’s fastball had slight run to it and sat 79-81, touching 82. He threw a slow-breaking 11/5 curveball that ran 60-63. He also threw a fading change-up that he commanded well and sat 68-70.
