Q&A with Coastal Carolina Commit Kieton Rivers

By Sammy Serrano
Director of Scouting

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Coastal Carolina commit Kieton Rivers.  The 6-foot, 165-pound, SS, from Nansemond River HS, is an athletic middle infielder with speed and range.

PBR:  What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?

Rivers:  My expectations during the recruiting process were met by Coastal Carolina by making my family and I feel right at home during our visit to Coastal Carolina. The challenging part was making a decision after visiting well established Educational Institutions.

PBR:  What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Rivers:  I looked for a Program that had my interest and an opportunity for me to grow and make it to the next level.

PBR:  Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Rivers:  I wanted to attend an Educational Institution away from home. Coastal Carolina is the ideal location.

PBR:  When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Was there a particular game or event that you feel turned the corner for you?

Rivers:  The recruiting process started to heat up for me during the fall/winter months of 2013. Coastal Carolina had seen me play and invited me down to campus.  I had the opportunity to attend a basketball game and really liked the unity that I observed from the faculty and students while attending the game.

PBR:  Where did the college you chose first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?

Rivers:  I was seen by one of Coastal Carolina's Recruiter in the summer of 2013 in Marietta, Georgia while playing for the Richmond Braves Nationals 17U. My relationship developed when my Richmond Braves Coach informed me of the Coastal Carolina's Recruiter's interest in me as a player.

PBR:  What do you like most about the college you committed to and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Rivers:  My family really enjoys South Carolina as the ideal vacation spot. So when I visited Coastal Carolina and had a chance to meet Faculty and Staff, I was very pleased with how my family and I were welcomed.

PBR:  What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Rovers:  There were a lot of other Educational Institutions that showed interest, but I only visited three before I made my decision. Coastal Carolina, University of Richmond, and Virginia Tech.

PBR:  At what point in your career did you realize you were a college caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

Rivers:  I realized that I was a College Caliber Player when I devoted my daily workout to help me get to the next level. And after my visit to Coastal Carolina that just intensified my efforts to be the best that I can be on and off the playing field.

PBR:  What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Rivers:  My advice to the younger players would be for them to stay focused in life, develop a workout regimen, stay true to yourself, and all ways be respectful.

PBR:  Preview your high school season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals?

Rivers:  We have a lot of players that are from last year that are returning seniors this year. We have a chance to really become major contributors during the season this year and next year at the college level. My goal is to bring home a State Championship!

PBR:  Where do you play in the summer? And what has been your most memorable experience with them?

Rivers:  I play for the Richmond Braves Nationals 17U and we have played in various states, such as, Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina etc. My most memorable experience with the Richmond Braves Nationals is the fact that both of my brothers played for the Organization and so did I. Looking back, I would say that it has really worked well for all of us. The Richmond Braves are a very good Organization and they helped me get to where I am today. And

Most importantly, my parents have played a tremendous part in me being the man that I have grown up to be today. Thanks Mom and Dad!
