Get to know prospect Jimmy Barnes...

PBR: Tell us where you grew up, when did you start playing baseball, and who were your baseball influences and why?

Barnes: I grew up in Chesapeake, VA and started playing baseball when I was about 4 years old.  My dad was my biggest influence because he was the one who got me interested in playing. Then as the years went by, listening to stories about how good he was at baseball gave me the drive to keep playing and being better than he was.

PBR: You have been receiving a lot of notoriety lately. How does it feel?

Barnes: It feels good. I’m very blessed and thank god every day for the talents he's given me.  Honestly, I'm still very humble about everything and am also excited to see what the future holds.

PBR: You are committed Louisburg College. Tell us who were in your top three, your best offers, and why you chose the school you did?

Barnes: My top 3 were West Virginia, Louisburg College, and Walters College. I chose Louisburg because I felt that would be a better fit for me and a place where I could go work on both sides of the game and as well as my education.

PBR: We know you’re a very talented player. Tell us all about you.  What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Barnes: My biggest strength is hitting. I feel like I have definitely improved in that area. My weakness is arm strength and speed, which I am currently working on improving.

PBR: You’re ranked in Virginia and Nationally by Prep Baseball Report VA/DC (PBR). How does that feel considering the size and talent in the state?

Barnes: It feels great! I'm honored to be recognized in the same category as the top players in my class.

PBR: What's your training look like this winter? Goals for the spring?

Barnes: This winter I'm hitting the weights hard trying to get stronger in all areas, as well as, working on my agility to improve my speed. I'm hitting everyday and throwing and trying to improve on all of my weaknesses. As far as this spring, I'm definitely just trying to slow the game down in my head, have quality at-bats, and do anything to help my team win as many games as possible, and have fun.

PBR: How was your high school season last year? Team record? Post season awards? Stats?

Barnes: Last year my team made it to the Conference Championship and lost. I was rewarded with 1st Team All-Conference 3rd Base, Co- Player of the year, as well as Honorable Mention 4A South All-Region. I finished my season batting .393 with a couple of HRs and 18 RBI.

PBR: Preview your high school season? How will your team be this year? Expectations?

Barnes: I expect our team to make it to Districts again and advance on to the next level. We have a team full of seniors so expectations are very high.

PBR: Who is the best player you will see this spring? Best team?

Barnes: The best players I will play this year will be Connor Eason or Andrew Bullock.  The best team we will face this year is Grassfield.

PBR:  What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Barnes: Definitely going to Jupiter, Florida. Just the atmosphere there was great. I loved it and that will be my most memorable moment in my baseball career so far.

PBR: Tell us something about yourself others don't know but would like to know.

Barnes: I love to fish. If I'm not playing baseball, lifting or hitting, fishing would definitely be my next option.
