Get to know prospect Stevie Mangrum...

PBR:  Tell us where you grew up, when did you start playing baseball, and who were your baseball influences and why?

Mangrum:  I grew up in Charlottesville, VA and started playing baseball at age 7.  My biggest influence was my father.  He taught me the game and was always able to practice with me and make me a better player.

PBR:
You have been receiving a lot of notoriety lately. How does it feel?

Mangrum:  I have been receiving more notoriety lately.  Although I am honored that all my hard work is paying off, the notoriety doesn’t mean anything.  I still have higher goals to reach.  I can’t stop now and enjoy the view until I am on the top and accomplished everything I have strived for.

PBR:
You are committed to Virginia Tech. Tell us who were in your top three, your best offers, and why you chose the school you did?

Mangrum:  My top three schools outside of Virginia Tech were Miami, UVA, and Duke.  All three of those schools were amazing but I chose Virginia Tech because I had the best opportunity there.  The coaches were very supportive of me and I am good friends with the other recruits.  I love the campus and atmosphere at Tech.  It is also an In-State school and they play in the competitive ACC Conference.

PBR:
We know you’re a very talented player. Tell us all about you.  What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Mangrum:  My strengths are hitting for power and average.  My running speed is also a tool of mine.  My weakness is my lack of flexibility, but I am currently working hard to improve that.

PBR:
You’re ranked in Virginia and Nationally by Prep Baseball Report VA/DC (PBR). How does that feel considering the size and talent in the state?

Mangrum:  I am honored to be ranked so high.  It’s nice to see my hard work paying off.

PBR:
What's your training look like this winter? Goals for the spring?

Mangrum:  My training this winter consists of going to the gym every day.  I am lifting twice a week and doing cardio, core work, and stretching the rest of the days.  My goal for this spring is to win the State Championship.

PBR:  How was your high school season last year? Team record? Post season awards? Stats?

Mangrum:  My high school season year was very good.  Our team went 20-2 and lost in Regionals.  I received 1st team All-District, All-Conference, All-Region, All-State, and All-Virginia (posted in USA today).  My stats were: BA-.508 OBA-.595 Slug-.831 Hits-33 Doubles-8 triples-5 HR-1 RBI-28.

PBR:
Preview your high school season? How will your team be this year? Expectations?

Mangrum:  We lost some key players from last year but I have no doubt that we will be just as good as, or better than, last year’s team.  We have experience and all the guys are fired up and driven to try and repeat last year.

PBR:
How are your academics? GPA? ACT? SAT? Any academic awards?

Mangrum:  My GPA is 3.896, my SAT score is 1540, and my sophomore year I received an English award.  Every year I am on the A-B Honor Roll.

PBR:
Who are the best teams you will face this year?

Mangrum:  Turner Ashby and Louisa are going to be very difficult games!

PBR:
What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Mangrum:  Winning the 2013 Perfect Game 16U WWBA, 2014 Perfect Game 17U WWBA, and 2014 Perfect Game Championship with the Evoshield Canes have been my most memorable moments.

PBR:
Tell us something about yourself others don't know but would like to know.

Mangrum:  I love to hit baseballs 24/7!
