Today we break down some of the data from our Stars Baseball Scout Day. See which players stood out in regards to Trackman data.

Best Individual Pitches Of Stars Scout Day:

Michael Lewis

Class of 2023 / RHP

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2023
  • Primary Position: RHP
    Secondary Position: OF
  • High School: Steward School
    State: VA
  • Summer Team: Mid-Atlantic Orioles 2023
  • Height: 6-0
    Weight: 185lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Michael Lewis’ curveball: Threw it laterally from 9:00. Has consistent tilts, got slightly more than 17 inches of sweep on one pitch. Gets some depth (-3.8 inches of IVB), and sweep (-12.2 HB). Throws it hard, just 9.4 mph off of FB, up to 70.1 mph with the CB. Classifies as a sweeping slider. Threw it in the zone 75% of the time.

Tyler Bassett

Class of 2024 / 3B

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2024
  • Primary Position: 3B
    Secondary Position: RHP
  • High School: Colgan
    State: VA
  • Summer Team: Stars 17u Sisk
  • Height: 5-10
    Weight: 175lbs
  • Bat/Throw: R/R

Tyler Bassett’s fastball: Touched 81.9 mph, has plus-spin on the pitch and combines that w/ high spin efficiency at 12:45, gives him above average VB and above average HB. Most vertical movement on a pitch was 20.6 inches, highest spin rate was 2,549 rpm. Averaged out at 80.3 mph. Threw it for a strike 42.9% of the time. Pitch plays like a back spinning FB with slight run. Potential for more VB as spin rate grows with velocity.

Kenny Michaels

Class of 2023 / LHP

Player Information

  • Graduating Class: 2023
  • Primary Position: LHP
    Secondary Position: 1B
  • High School: Hayfield
    State: VA
  • Summer Team: Midland Baseball
  • Height: 6-4
    Weight: 200lbs
  • Bat/Throw: L/R

Kenny Michael’s slider: Didn’t throw it in the zone often, but movement of pitch has potential with velocity gains. Currently averaging out at  72.5 mph, hit 73.7. Average raw spin at 2,039 rpm, but optimized movement and low spin efficiency to limit lift on pitch (just 0.6 inches of IVB) and very little HB (6.8 inches). It’s a gyro-heavy pitch. Throwing it 8.4 mph lower than the FB. Could try and generate more sweep by raising efficiency slightly to make the pitch play better at its current velocity. But if he left it as it is currently, in two years when it’s 77-80, it would be far more effective.
