TPG West: Primary Catcher Analysis

In late-June, PBR VA/DC hosted the Top Prospect Games West at Liberty University. Over 50 players from multiple classes and all corners of Virginia took part in the event, and we begin our analysis of those players today with the primary catchers.

 


 

Clark Driscoll C / SS / Clover Hill , VA / 2022

Driscoll is 5-8 with a strong athletic frame. He hits from the right side from an upright slightly open athletic stance, short stride on line, short load back and down. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Keeps hands inside, short to the ball, strength at contact and extension through the ball, has some batspeed. Uphill swing path, pull approach with loft in his swing, exit velocity was 75. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, catcher velocity was 75 and pop times were 2.07-2.15. Showed some accuracy with his throws. Showed versatility taking balls in the infield, where his arm played up to 81.

 

Hunter Hertig C / OF / Lebanon, VA / 2021

Hertig is 5-10 with a lankier athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a wide balanced stance, strides in place, loads back and wraps. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance after weight shift. Keeps hands inside, slightly uphill swing path, strong at contact point. Swing generates line drives that have carry, worked primarily gap-to-gap, exit velocity was 87. Behind the plate, steps into exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, catcher velocity was 69 and pop times were 2.11-2.22. Showed some accuracy with his throws. Ran a 6.98 60 yard dash.

 

 

Cameron Jackson C / OF / Bland County, VA / 2020

Jackson is 5-9 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced stance, strides on line, short load back. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Short, uphill swing path, showed pull preference and some strength at contact, exit velocity was 77. Behind the plate, gains ground on his exchange, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, catcher velocity was 69 and pop times were 2.27-2.36. Ran a 7.41 60 yard dash.

 

 

Jackson Murphy

C / RHP / bRIAR WOODS, VA / 2021

Murphy is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced stance, short leg kick stride on line, loads back. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Stays inside ball, slightly uphill swing path, line drive swing with some loft built in, showed pull preference and some extra-base pop, exit velocity was 82. Behind the plate, gains ground during a clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, catcher velocity was 69 and pop times were 2.10-2.22.

 

Christopher Polymeropoulos C / 2B / James Madison, VA / 2020

Polymeropolous has committed to Roanoke College and is 5-7 with a strong athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced stance, very short stride on line, slight load back. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Stays inside ball, short swing with strength at contact and some whippy extension through the ball. Slightly uphill swing path, line drive swing with some loft built in, worked gap to gap, exit velocity was 84. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, catcher velocity was 70 and pop times were 2.06-2.18. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Ran a 7.10 60 yard dash.

 

Wayne Romero C / 1B / West Springfield, VA / 2020

Romero is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, very short stride on line, slight load back. Hips rotate some and he maintains good lower half balance. Stays inside ball, fast bat, some strength at contact. Slightly uphill swing path, line drive swing with some loft built in, showed good approach and worked gap to gap, exit velocity was 78. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a very high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action and some life on his throws, catcher velocity was 75 and pop times were 2.08-2.20. Showed very good accuracy on his throws. Ran a 7.39 60 yard dash.

 

Jackson Severt C / 3B / Dinwiddie, VA / 2021

Severt is 6-1 with an athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open athletic stance, strides on line, loads down. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Short to the ball and stays inside, quick bat with very long levers, gets good extension through contact. Slightly uphill swing path, line drive swing with loft built in, showed a pull approach with easy gap power that way and potential for home run power, exit velocity was 88. Severt was recovering from a spring injury and was not ready to catch at this event. He did show versatility and worked out in the outfield, where he had a clean exchange and his velocity was 89 from a three-quarters arm slot. Also worked out at third where his velocity was 87. Ran a 7.33 60 yard dash.

 

Tyler Sparrer C / 1B / Auburn, VA / 2022

Sparrer is 6-0 with a strong athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open upright stance, strides on line, smooth load back. Hips rotate and he maintains some lower half balance. Stays inside ball, short to ball, some strength at contact. Slightly uphill swing path, line drive swing with some carry in the gaps, showed a pull preference, exit velocity was 81. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, catcher velocity was 68 and pop times were 2.05-2.17. Showed some accuracy on his throws.
