QUICK HITS

A very talented pool of players and teams from around the region were in Catonsville this weekend for the UMBC Summer Kickoff. New players came onto the scene and returning players showed off their development.

Very exciting to have three teams come down from New Jersey and one team in particular, SJB Baseball impressed from the beginning. The young squad of primarily 2018 grads showcased an athletic team from top to bottom, with leadoff man 2018 Erick Riley having an impressive tournament. After day one, Riley was 6-for-8 showing a short quick swing along with the ability to get to top speed quickly. 2018 Kevin Eaise jumped out for SBJ, showing off his arm strength going 86-88 on the bump. Also keep an eye on Jaden Diaz-Lambert, Charles Walker, and Trey Crumpler, just to name a few from the talented team.

Stars Baseball again showed a deep and talented pool of players on both their Red and White rosters, many of whom should help a college program down the road. Nick Stewart pitched 84-85 with his lanky projectable frame on the hill to go with his above average secondary. Toma Shigaki-Than was 85-88 in his outing working efficiently on the mound coupled with his hard 78 mph breaking ball. Connor Hartigan quickly got to show off his arm strength in the outfield throwing out a runner at third base from fairly deep in right field.

RHP/OF Ryan Bywaters continues to grow at the plate and showed that yet again this weekend. The lefty bat has good plate coverage and is using the whole field. Another Mid-Atlantic Red Sox talent, Eric Lansinger has started to fill out his athletic frame. The Damascus HS product is quickly looking like he will develop into a nice power threat at the plate from the left side.

Rawlings Prospect 17u went 3-0 on the weekend and starting off for the A’s was RHP Matt Grogan, a projectable 2018 from St. Michaels HS. Grogan continues to grow on the mound with his loose arm action and looks to have more in the tank as he develops.

Another interesting raw talent to keep an eye on is 2017 Perez Nichols of Laurel HS (DE) playing for the Mizuno Aces. Lots of athleticism to go along with a fastball up to 88 mph.

Stay tuned this week as we continue to break down the tournament and have a more in-depth breakdown from teams and their players in attendance along with a statistical breakdown.
