Grassfield jumped out to a big, early lead at Great Bridge on Tuesday and would not look back. After taking a commanding 15-0 lead, Great Bridge would throw up eight, but would not get any closer than a seven run deficit. The Grizzlies would win by a final score of 21-10.

Take a look at five players that stood out on Tuesday night in Chesapeake.

Grassfield:

Jackson Donahue C / 2B / Grassfield, VA / 2022

Compact 5-foot-9, 180-pound frame. Square stance at the plate, hands set high, and a direct hands first approach to contact. It is a level swing path and he did a nice job adjusting his posture to pitch plane. Behind the plate he displays average arm strength, but was accurate around the bag.

Joseph Fredericks LHP / OF / Grassfield, VA / 2023

Compact 5-foot-9, 182-pound frame. He has a very strong lower half and has added some lean strength in the upper body. On the mound he works with intent from a low three-quarter slot. The fastball sat 84-87 mph and topped at 88 mph with hard arm side run. Showed a slider that was wipeout at times. 71-73 mph and varied shapes, but was best when it had more sweep to it. Fredericks also showed a 76-77 mph changeup with average feel for the zone. All in all it was more control than command, but the stuff is very good.

Maddox Tsutsui SS / 2B / Grassfield , VA / 2023

Compact 5-foot-9, 160-pound frame. Tsutsui stood out in pregame and then it carried over in game. Had a little bounce in his step at shortstop. Clean actions with a quick exchange and average arm strength across. He also displayed the ability to throw on the run. At the plate he was aggressive early in counts and attacked pitches in the zone. Balanced, square stance, hands have some rhythm, and delivers a level path through the zone. The junior shortstop did a nice job keeping his hands inside. It is a contact driven swing with line drive tendencies and uses the whole field in approach.

Bradley Zayac RHP / 3B / Grassfield, VA / 2024

6-foot-1, 175-pound lanky frame with projection left. It has been about seven months since we have seen Zayac and what a nice jump he has made. Arm has gotten quicker, velo has made a fairly significant jump, and just looks the part on the mound. Again it is a pretty quick arm, low three-quarter slot, and the ball jumps out of the hand. The fastball sat 83-86 mph with some hard arm side run. The slider, while having some inconsistent feel for the zone early, the 72-75 mph offering showed some swing and miss potential. Zayac is quickly becoming one of the more interesting uncommitted '24 arms in the state.

Great Bridge:

Caden Ward SS / RHP / Great Bridge, VA / 2023

Athletic thin frame standing 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame. Gathers upright over the rubber before a drop and drive down the mound, landing on line. Full arm circle and throws from three-quarter slot. Ward showed the ability to throw three pitches for strikes from the jump. It was a fastball, curveball, changeup mix and used the changeup effectively. The fastball sat at 79-81 mph and worked to both sides of the plate. He threw the breaking ball for strikes at 63-66 mph with 12/6 shape. The changeup had gradual fade at 73-76 mph with above average feel for the zone.
