South Lakes traveled to No. 21 Yorktown on Monday night as both teams opened up their 2021 seasons with a Liberty District matchup. The game featured a showdown of 2022 Division I committed arms, with Ryan Ertlschweiger (James Madison) starting for South Lakes and James Tallon (Duke) on the mound for the Patriots.
Yorktown jumped out to an early 3-run lead, taking advantage of four straight base hits to open the game, with Jacob Friend (Davidson) delivering an RBI single while Nathan Knowles (William & Mary) drove another one in on a fielder's choice and a second run scored when the throw to first got away. After that, Ertlschweiger settled in and held the Yorktown offense in check, ultimately pitching 6 innings, striking out 9 and allowing just those 4 hits in the first inning and 1 walk.
Tallon was dominant early, striking out 6 in the first two innings en route to 10 total over 5.2 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 2 walks. He exited the sixth with two outs, one runner on, and a 3-0 lead. That's when the Seahawks came alive. A walk put a second runner on and shortstop Jonah Neihardt got South Lakes on the board with an RBI single. After another pitching change, an error cut the score to 3-2 and put runners on the corners. South Lakes ran a double steal, with a collision occuring at the plate, the runner was initially called out but the call was overturned, tying the game at 3. Robert Reddington then delivered and RBI single to left, giving South Lakes a 4-3 lead.
