Scouting Report

VA/DC Scout Blog

Left handed hitting shortstop showed an advanced approach at the plate with patience and intent in every pitch. Tomlin has a strong athletic frame and a mature feel to his game. After Collins unloaded on the first pitch Tomlin followed up with an absolute missile over the second baseman. On the day it was easy to notice Quade had a good feel for the strike zone and early in counts was not expanding his strengths in the hitting zone. Defensively moved well and showed to be a leader on the field. To add to his experience and maturity it didn't hurt when he made a Jeter-esque play from the deep 6-hole throwing off his right foot getting the runner with a throw dead in line at first.

Top Prospect Games

Tomlin is 6-0 with an athletic frame that still has projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a balanced athletic stance. Quiet set-up, short stride on line, smooth load back. Explosive lower half with very good balance during swing. Short quick bat path, pretty swing. Level line drive swing with a whippy bat, showed a pull tendency. Potential to generate power to all fields, exit velocity was 91. At short, clean feet, fields ball with soft hands and a wider base. Quick clean exchange, plays through the ball, throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, infield velocity was 80.

Tomlin is developing into a special middle infield prospect. He shows much improvement in his game since the last time we saw him and his physical development is coming along nicely. At the plate he his from an athletic set up and has a smooth swing. He is short at the plate with fast bat speed and controlled aggression in the swing. Power to pull side is present already; he hit a towering homerun over the 20-foot fence in left 325-feet away at Hillcat Stadium in Lynchburg, the minor league affiliate. That got him in some trouble as he was out on his front foot in a couple swings, but he makes adjustments and shows advanced ability for his age at the plate. Defensively he is smooth with range and arm strength with the ability to throw from multiple angles firm and accurate.

Area Code Underclass Games 2018

Day 1 - Uncommitted. Tomlin is sure of his approach when at the plate. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder possesses lean strength, and works slightly uphill through the zone with gap to gap power. He collected two singles in the game along with a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield. There is lots to like about the potential impact bat.

Day 2 - Uncommitted. Tomlin is building a case to be one of the top bats in the class, and showed off natural rhythm and feel for the barrel at the plate. Already possessing some power to the pull side, his 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame will add more strength in the future, and he could see another boost.

5.17.17: Athletic projectable frame that is still growing. Exciting prospect in 2020 class. Hits from a square athletic stance with hands above shoulders while digging in at the plate. Smooth load with fast bat speed and extension through contact and some uphill finish. Shows some pull side pop at the plate. Athletic actions in the field with a quick and confident first step. Soft hands and clean actions. Picked a chopper up the middle, running through, throwing across body in front of bag with carry on throw and made look easy.
