Commitment Corner - '20 RHP Logan Mercado

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Commitment Corner is back with our next feature. This time we're taking a look at Oregon commit, RHP Logan Mercado (Tri-Cities Prep)

scouting notes

Strong bodied with balanced strength between his upper/lower half. Mercado possesses a solid combination of size, stuff and pitchability. At 6-foot, 185 pounds, he has a durable frame and pitches with sustainable effort. Delivery has consistent, quick-paced tempo. Stays tall at leg lift while keeping weight back. Shows some drop & drive action during short, forward stride. Shoulders stay level as he gets to low ¾ release point. Short, clean arm action with hand speed out front. Does an exceptional job blocking momentum with lead leg, allowing him to still rotate & finish his offerings while staying upright. FB sat 85-88 on our look but Mercado has a track record of running it up to 90-92 while featuring some arm-side run on the ball. Showed confidence in his CH at 80-82. Has the look of a reliable offering, especially against more advanced LH bats. Slurve shaped breaking ball has chance to be above average. At its best, features sharp, late bend out of the zone at 71-74. Overall, Mercado has a quality 3-pitch arsenal with an understanding of how to keep hitters off balance.

PBR: Why did you choose Oregon?
LM: I chose Oregon because of the world class facilities and the amazing coaching staff. I felt like it was the best place to get my degree while playing the game I love at a place I love

PBR: When did you make your decision?
LM: I made it during the fall of my sophomore year

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you play? Who was your primary recruiter?
LM: About 3 days after coach Waz was hired, he flew out to San Diego to watch me play at Point Loma. It really showed how much he cared about us and how much dedication he’s willing to put into his players.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer/fall and what has that experience been like?
LM: I played for the Spokane Dodgers this summer along with Baseball NW. Playing with the Dodgers was an awesome experience. It was the first time I was playing with older guys about to go to college. We all had the same goals and it was really cool to play with guys that were full out, mentally focused on their goals. I’ve been playing with Baseball NW since 8th grade and it had been some of the best baseball I’ve ever been a part of. I’ve had the opportunity to play some of the best players in the country while meeting a lot of people throughout the NW. They truly have brought my game to a level I didn’t think I’d ever get to.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
LM: I was a freshman in high school playing for varsity in the state championship. We were down 3-1 in the 8th with 2 outs with a man on 1st and I was up to bat. With a 2-0 count I hit a lined shot over the left field wall for a 2-run HR to tie it. That swing was probably the biggest moment of my life to date.

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter you have faced in Washington?
LM: Probably the toughest hitter I’ve faced has been Corey Jarrell. Me and him are really close and we play each other in the playoffs in baseball and basketball. It’s always good competing against him but he has my stuff down. Always hard to get him out.

PBR: Any pre-game superstitions?
LM: I take my pre-game catch very seriously. I always play catch a certain way to get warmed up. That’s the part of my pre-game routine that will never change. I also like to get in the zone by listening to Mötley Crüe.

PBR: Favorite MLB player and why?
LM: My favorite player is Trevor Bauer. I really like his style of pitching and he’s a super funny guy, which I relate with.

PBR: What would be your top walk-out song? (The edited version)
LM: The best walk out song is definitely “Bound 2” by Kanye West.
