Commitment Corner - '20 SS/RHP Nate Clow

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Our next commitment corner features USC commit SS/RHP Nate Clow (Todd Beamer). The athletic 2-way prospect currently holds down the #1 overall ranking in the state. Check out notes, video and how he ending up committing to the Trojans.

Scouting notes

At the plate, Clow sets-up in a balanced, athletic stance just slightly open to the pitcher. Loads with a controlled leg lift as he gathers on his backside. Head stays quiet, hands remain loose during forward move as he gets into landing. Generates above average bat speed with minimal effort. Level barrel path into the zone with the typical, smooth lefty finish. Everything works together in rhythm. Creates power by being fluid with proper sequencing in the swing as opposed to raw strength. Maintains a disciplined approach. Doesn’t expand or chase early in the count. Defensively, the actions play at any INF position with plenty of arm strength. Light on his feet with a quick first step laterally. Has the ability to manipulate arm slot as needed. Also has the chance to impact the game on the mound. FB has been up to 90, 91 on the bump when we’ve had eyes on him. Also mixed in a hard breaking ball at 74-77. Overall, Clow has an impressive combination of tools and his track record of success on the national scene has him on the cusp of being a Top 200 prospect nationally.

PBR: Why did you choose USC?
NC: The first time I stepped on campus I absolutely loved it, I've always wanted to go down to Southern California so when I was able to get recruited by them it was a dream come true. I love the coaches, I love the tradition and everything about USC.

PBR: When did you make your decision?
NC: USC was the last visit I took out of the schools I was looking at. I ended up committing there a week later in early December, 2018.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you play? Who was your primary recruiter?
NC: They saw me play down at the Phil Singer tournament in San Diego when I was playing with the Sweets, we ended up winning the whole thing. The Phil Singer is a good tournament to go to if you want to play in California because all of the Nor Cal and So Cal schools are there. Gabe Alvarez was the coach who recruited me most!

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer/fall and what has that experience been like?
NC: This summer I played for the SF Giants scout team out of Florida. They're in the Florida Travel Ball organization so I spent my whole summer playing baseball in all the south-eastern states. It was an amazing experience. I had great coaches in Joe Girardi, Alan Kunkel, and Nelly Gonzalez whom all taught me so much about baseball and life in general. Obviously it's a lot different down there than it is in Seattle but I loved my teammates and it was so fun being able to form new bonds and play against the top talent from the east coast.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
NC: My most memorable baseball moment to date is when I went down to Chicago for the USA NTDP, I was able to learn so much from all the coaches there and got to make many new friendships with incredibly talented players all across the country.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher you have faced in Washington?
NC: I haven’t faced a ton of people in Washington recently but I know Jonah Giblin (Bainbridge/Oregon State commit) and Duke Brotherton (Mercer Island/Washington State commit) are tough to hit off.

PBR: Any pre-game superstitions?
NC: My superstitions include doing the same warm-up routine before every single game.

PBR: Favorite MLB player and why?
NC: My favorite MLB player is probably Gavin Lux just because I love the way he plays and him being a left handed hitting shortstop makes it easy to like him haha. I like the swagger he brings with his style of play and the way he carries himself both on and off the field.

PBR: What would be your top walk-out song? (The edited version)
NC: I don't have amazing taste in music but I might go with something like 'Nonstop' By Drake or 'Do Not Disturb' by YG
