GRAND CHUTE, WI – Waunakee (19-6) advanced to the nightcap semifinals on day one of the state tournament with a 12-8 win over Eau Claire North (21-4). The Warriors were powered by a flurry of late game offense, scoring 10 of the 12 runs in the final three frames.
The Fueger brothers (Jarrett and Ryne) provided the Warriors a spark at the bottom of the lineup as the duo went a combined 4-for-8 with four RBI and three runs scored. Jarrett capped off a five run sixth inning that broke a 7-7 tie with an RBI double after Ben Nordloh broke it open with a bases clearing double to left center.
The Huskies looked to rally in the seventh, Jeffrey Pippenger’s RBI single made it a 12-8 deficit. Eau Claire North eventually loaded the bases for cleanup hitter Jaelin Williams, who doubled to right for two RBI in his last at bat, and Waunakee made a call to the pen. Sophomore Taiten Manriquez came in from third base to get Williams to ground into a fielders’ choice and nail down the save.
Waunakee advances to Semifinal play in the nightcap, taking on Green Bay Preble.
