EAU CLAIRE, WI - In a matchup of cross town rivals, the No. 1 Eau Claire North Huskies and the No. 13 Eau Claire Memorial Old Abes faced off Tuesday night at Carson Park and lived up to it's potential as the Huskies edged the Old Abes by a score of 3-2.
North got the scoring started right away in the first inning as Zac Stange walked to lead off the game and was sac bunted to second before Ryan Venne crushed a ball to deep center to score Stange. Memorial would answer in the bottom of the first with a single by senior catcher Adam Krajewski and a scorched ball to deep center by Sam Hanson.
The score would remain the same until the fourth inning when Venne walked to lead off and a wild pitch moved him up to second base and Jalen Williams deposited a 3-1 pitch in the left center gap to score Venne. Williams would eventually score on a sharply hit ball back up the box by Nick Hestekin.
Memorial inched closer with a run of its own on back to back singles by Hanson and Keagan Calchera to lead off the sixth. Starter Tanner Halvorson would be replaced by Ryan Venne who would record the final two outs of the frame but not before a Lucas Goebrict RBI groundout plated Hanson, leaving the tying run 90 feet away.
North threatened to add an insurance run in the seventh off new pitcher Tanner Kohlhepp, who struggled to find the strike zone but settled in to strikeout Halvorson and Williams, extinguishing the threat.
The same two teams will be back in action to finish up this Big Rivers rivalry matchup on Thursday.
