Senior Games Mississippi Valley: Pitching Analysis

Wrapping up our coverage of the Senior Games we take a look at the top pitching prospects in attendance. Superior HS RHP Justin Reinkall showcased the best pure stuff with a hard swing and miss slider and a livey arm action producing an 83-85 mph fastball.

Here’s a look at our top eight arms from the event.

Top Pitching Prospects

1. Justin Reinkall, RHP, Superior, 2017
6-foot-2, 178-pound right-handed pitcher, lean loose frame. High upside pitcher, quick arm the projects well. Uptempo delivery, slight effort. Arm action is live and loose, quick arm from a high ¾ slot. Fastball finishes with arm side sink, played harder than velocity suggested, sat 83-85 mph. Slider has sharp 10/4 action, thrown hard and aggressively with confidence, 75-77 mph. Flashed a changeup at 75-76 mph.

2. Bryce Wesling, LHP/OF, New Berlin Eisenhower, 2017
6-foot-1, 170-pound left-handed throwing, right-handed hitting two-way player, lean lanky frame, projects best on the mound. Confident mound presence. Delivery repeats slightly across his body, tall and fall type. Arm action is long and loose, ¾ slot. Fastball sat 79-80 mph, showed ability to control the zone with arm side run. Slider sweeps on 2/8 plane, showed sharp action, swing and miss out pitch that has ability to drop for strikes to both lefties and righties. Struck out two in one inning of work. Right-handed hitter, open setup, short stride, path has length, level. 77 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played similarly in the outfield, 81 mph. Average actions playing through the baseball. 7.38 runner in the 60.

3. Hunter DeSmet, RHP, Holmen, 2017
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. Short over the top arm action from a compact and repeatable delivery. Showed feel for three pitches. Fastball flashed cutting action, 78-81 mph, touching 82 mph. Curveball sat 65-66 with 11/5 shape, ability to throw for strikes. Changeup has arm side run at 73 mph. Struck out three in two innings of action.

4. Luke Kundinger, SS/RHP, Waukesha West, 2017
6-foot, 165-pound two-way player, average athletic frame. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, average balance. Hands are loose and athletic, bat control, level path. 75 mph exit velocity from the tee. Singled twice in game play. Defensively played fast and athletically on the infield, good body control and made plays consistently on the move, well above average hands. ARm is loose and plays athletically, showed carry across, 84 mph. On the mound arm is loose. High ¾ slot. Fastball slightly runs to arm side, 78-81 mph, touched 82 mph. Feel for curveball, controlled well for strikes, 11/5 shape, 69-71 mph. 

5. Eli Foth, RHP, Kettle Moraine, 2017
Long slender frame, 6-foot-4, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. Tall and fall type delivery, balanced finish, regular effort. Arm action comes out of short window, high ¾ slot. Fastball lacked command, 79-81 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, 64-67 mph, showed best in his second inning of work. Struck out four in two innings, mostly with his fastball.

6. Joshua Hunt, LHP, Waukesha West, 2017
6-foot-1, 170-pound left-handed pitcher, slender build. Tall and fall delivery is balanced with an ability to repeat, regular effort, tucks front side into balance point, high front side. Arm action is loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball has running action, 75-77 mph. Showed a curveball on 1/7 plane, 65-68 mph. Flashed changeup at 68-72 mph. Showed pitchability, changed speeds well, struck out four in two innings pitched.

7. Jordan Van Dyke, RHP, Elkhorn Area, 2017
6-foot-4, 200-pound right-handed pitcher, large frame, solid build. Repeats delivery well and pounded the zone well with his fastball. Arm action is short and over the top, works directionally to his target. Fastball is straight, commanded both sides of the plate, especially his glove side, 77-79 mph. Curveball is 12/6, 64-70 mph.

8. Nathan Renner, RHP/1B, Tremper, 2017
6-foot-2, 215-pound two-way player, solid build. On the mound delivery is compact and directional, short over the top arm action. Fastball is straight, 78-80 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, 70-72 mph. Ground ball outs in game. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, leg kick stride. Favors pull side pop approach, lacked extension, looked to lift. 80 mph exit velocity from the tee.

Alex Behr, LHP/1B, Oak Creek, 2017
6-foot-2, 210-pound, two-way player. On the mound, Tall and fall delivery, stays in line. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fastball, works most straight, 71-72 mph. Curveball, 1/7 shape, 60 mph. Offensively, tall setup, short stride, Short, uphill path through the zone; exit velocity registered at 78 mph from a tee. Defensively, reliable hands, clean exchange. Loose arm action from a high ¾ to ¾ slot; throws clocked at 72 mph across the diamond. 7.87 runner in the laser timed 60.

Matt Brandeen, LHP, St. Croix Central, 2017
Long gangly frame, 6-foot-4, 200-pound left-handed pitcher. Delivery has some deception, high front side, creates some angle. Long arm action from a ¾ slot. Fastball has sink on tough angle for lefties, 77-79 mph. Slider played at 69-71 mph with some lateral action. Changeup at 73-74 mph, slight fade.

Tsering Dorjee, RHP, Madison Memorial, 2017
Compact frame, 5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed pitcher. Delivery works directionally with squared landing and regular effort. Slide step from the stretch. Short, high ¾ arm action. Fastball has slight sinking action, sat 78-80 mph, touched 81 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, 67-69 mph. Changeup played at 70-75 mph. Struck out three in two innings.

Dylan Fluegel, SS/RHP, Oak Creek, 2017
5-foot-10, 175-pound two-way player, athletic shape with strength. Right-handed hitter, open stance, loads hands back, arm bar load, good balance. Showed barrel control in BP, squared up the baseball, line drive gap to gap type. 81 mph exit velocity from the tee. Doubled in game play. Defensively feet worked well, average hands, plays through the baseball. 7.6 runner in the 60. Arm action is short and over the top, flashed carry, 81 mph across the diamond. On the mound fastball was mostly straight, four seam type, 78-80 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, 66-68 mph. Also showed a knuckle ball at 68-70 mph.

Jack Kraemer, OF/RHP, Oconomowoc, 2017
5-foot-9, 142-pound two way player. Right-handed hitter, hits from a slightly taller and open stance, short stride. Spray contact in BP, path has length and works uphill. 77 mph exit velocity from the tee. Singled in game play. Defensively arm played at 73 mph from the outfield, long high ¾ slot. Ran the 60 at 7.44, 4.8 down the line. On the mound arm action is long, high ¾ slot, occasionally gets lower to a ¾ slot. Fastball touched 76 mph sat mostly 72-73 mph. Curveball is 58-59 mph. Changeup worked at 65-68 mph.

Joshua Kunstman, INF/RHP, Freedom, 2017
6-foot-4, 175-pound, lanky, two-way player. Offensively, right-handed hitter, has bat speed, flashed power, level path through the zone, exit velocity clocked at 90. Balanced setup, short stride, showed ability to maintain balance through contact. Defensively, reliable hands, fluid footwork. Short arm action from an over the top slot; throws clocked at 75 mph across the diamond. 7.22 runner in the laser timed 60. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, regular effort, long arm action from an over the top slot. Fastball, most straight, sat 72-74 mph. Curveball, 12/6 shape, 61 mph. Changeup, fade action, 63-66 mph.

Matt McCann, RHP, Eau Claire Regis, 2017
6-foot-4, 240-pound right-handed pitcher, large frame. Regular effort, delivery lands square. Long arm action, over the top slot. Fastball is straight, 76-78 mph, touched 79 mph, command of the strike zone. Curveball has 11/5 shape with gradual action, 64-68 mph.

Eric Obst, RHP/INF, Waukesha West, 2017
5-foot-11, 175-pound, two-way player. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, regular effort, stays in line, lands square. Short arm action from an over the top slot. Fastball, most straight, 76-78 mph, T80. Curveball, varied between 12/6 and 11/5 shape, gradual action, 65-67 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, balanced setup, leg kick. Pull-side approach, long path through the zone, exit velocity clocked at 76 mph from the tee. Defensively, reliable hands on the infield, glove pat to release. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot; throws clocked at 79 mph across the diamond. 7.72 runner in the laser timed 60.
