Stevens Point 5, Eau Claire North 1

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – After play was suspended on Tuesday due to the rains, game one of the Wisconsin Rapids Sectional would resume in the fifth inning with Eau Claire North up to bat and two men aboard and nobody out, Stevens Point leading 4-0.

The Panthers resumed action right where they left off on Tuesday sending junior southpaw Cal Giese back to the hill. Giese started the game on Tuesday and hadn’t allowed a run to this point, working on just two days rest Giese looked sharp early sitting at 81-83 mph while touching 84 mph on occasion and locating an 11/5 breaking ball.

North got things started with a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners up to second and third. Then with one out Trey Boettcher hit a sacrifice fly to right that would put the Huskies on the board.

Stevens Point quickly answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth to put the lead back to four, junior outfielder Jon Barnes tallied the RBI.

After an uneventful sixth frame, the Huskies came to bat with their last chance to extend their season. Giese recorded the first two outs rather effortlessly but Eau Claire North would not go quietly. North worked two walks surrounded by a base hit to bring the tying run to the plate and a mound visit from the dugout.

Giese settled back in and got the final out himself recording a 1-3 putout to send Stevens Point to the Sectional Championship.
