Higgins & Minnick Shine for Team Pennsylvania

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

Team Pennsylvania recorded its first win in two years at the 2013 Midwest Future Games with a 6-4 win over Illinois. LHP Connor Higgins (Parkland HS, Class of 2015) and C/3B Zach Minnick (Logan HS, Class of 2015) played major roles in the victory and saw their stock rise dramatically following solid performances throughout the course of the event. Both are already scheduled to begin the college visitation process this week to begin the process of selecting a college.

Higgins worked 3.2 innings on the weekend, sitting 84-86 while touching 87 mph. He worked 1.2 innings to start Team PA's win over Illinois. The lefty has a loose arm and a power pitcher's frame at 6-foot-3, 200-pounds. Higgins effectively mixed his fastball with a 72 mph curveball and an 80 mph changeup. He struck out six and yielded just two hits in his time on the mound. Currently ranked No. 8 in PA and No. 32 in the PBR combined rankings for the Class of 2015, Higgins did more than enough to warrant his place in the rankings.

Minnick came into the Midwest Future Games as a virtual unknown in scouting circles, but left Indiana as a high end catching prospect in the Class of 2015. The No. 1 ranked prospect in his class in West Virginia caught everyone's attention early on when he turned in an event best 1.79 pop time with throws of 82 mph from the crouch in defensive evaluations. Minnick runs a 7.12 60-yard dash at 6-foot, 215-pounds and has legitimate pop in his bat. The right-handed hitter had a double and a two-run home run on the weekend, the later of which propelled Team PA to an early lead against Illinois. Minnick also flashed some potential on the mound sitting 85-87 while touching 90 mph.
