By Greg Williams
West Virginia Director of Scouting

The Preseason All-State Showcase took place on February 13 and 14 at Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manheim, PA. The roster included close to 100 players from three states including with Nicholas County junior Tate Mayes carrying the torch for West Virginia.

Tate Mayes, C/3B, Nicholas County HS
Tate MayesMayes is a 6-foot-2, 205-pound right-handed hitter. He starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a heel raise stride. The junior displayed a 92 mph bat exit velocity with a flat barrel path leading to consistent solid contact. Mayes flashed 75 mph arm strength out of the crouch with pop times of 2.25-2.34 from a 3/4 arm slot. His pop times would benefit from additional work to become more directional. Mayes demonstrated a solid feel for blocking and a tendency to drag the ball out of the zone when receiving.

The two-sport standout also plays quarterback for Nicholas county and has thrown 24 touchdown passes over the past two seasons.
