With the start of the high school season is less than a month away we will be previewing each region in each classification statewide. In addition to a look at the top teams we will also highlight some of the top prospects in each region. Look for our initial Elite Eight team rankings in each classification to appear later this month.
Ravenswood (26-9) / East Fairmont (14-7)
Ravenswood appears to be the favorite following a banner season that fell short of a region championship when the Red Devils fell to perennial state tournament participant Fairmont Senior. This could very well be the year that a new team advances out of Region I and although Ravenswood lost some offensive fire power to graduation they return enough talent to get the early season nod. If East Fairmont can find enough pitching to support Preseason Player of the Year Jacob Bolander, the Bees could also find themselves on a bus to Charleston in June.
Jacob Bolander, RHP/3B, East Fairmont HS (Class of 2016)
Bolander was named Co-MVP of the Black Team following his five innings of work at the WV Top Prospect Games in August. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound righty sat 81-83 from a high 3/4 arm slot giving up just one run on two hits while striking out four. Bolander also commanded a 71 mph curveball with tight 11/5 rotation and a 70 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed. The junior has sound, repeatable mechanics and a frame that projects for velocity gains in the coming years.
* The Eagles look to build on a section championship and a 12-2 loss to Fairmont Senior in the Regional semifinals last year.
