Region Preview: Class AAA - Region II

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

With the start of the high school season less than a month away we will be previewing each region in each classification statewide. In addition to a look at the top teams we will also highlight some of the top prospects in each region.

                 Class AAA - Region II

Preseason Favorites

Hedgesville (27-7) / Hampshire (25-4)

The race for the Region II title looks to be between two familiar opponents. Hedgesville knocked off Hampshire 4-3 in the region final last year prior to winning the state title. Both teams were hit with significant losses to graduation but return enough of their 2013 key components to be considered favorites again. Look for as many as five teams in Region II to have a shot at the title however.

In the Hunt

Musselman (21-13), Martinsburg (17-17), Elkins (16-13)

Of the three, Musselman on paper has the edge if a new club is to rise to the top of the region. The Applemen were hit hard by graduation on offense losing much of their run production from 2013. What the Musselman do return is a fairly intact pitching staff with 15 of last year's 21 wins being recorded by pitchers that return in 2014.

Shane EnnisPreseason Player of the Year

Shane Ennis, RHP/OF, Hampshire HS (Class of 2014)

Ennis has sat at No. 1 in the West Virginia Class of 2014 rankings since PBR's arrival in the state in May of 2013. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound righty had a 2-3 record in 2013 with 8 saves and 68 strikeouts in 40 innings of work, mostly out of the bullpen. Ennis, who sits 86-88 mph with his fastball, will assume the No. 1 starter role for the Trojans following the departure of Matt Maiers (Potomac State). When not on the mound the WVU commit also has the ability to affect the game. Ennis hit .447 with 38 RBI, 10 doubles, a triple and six home runs as a junior.
