Sophomore Spotlight: 1B Cary Casto

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

Cary CastoCary Casto doesn't look like your typical sophomore in high school. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound 1B also doesn't play like your average sophomore. Casto, No. 2 in the WV Class of 2016 rankings, put up senior-like numbers during his freshman campaign in 2013. He hit .340 with a .433 on base percentage while driving in 30 runs. Casto had 34 hits on the season, four of which went for doubles. He is likely to add to those power numbers dramatically with three high school seasons remaining.

Casto jump started his freshman season with a 4-for-4 game that included two doubles and three RBI on April 13 against St. Joseph Central. Three days later he went 1-for-4 in a game against Charleston Catholic to begin an 11 game hitting streak that saw him go 18-for-40. He proceeded to follow a hitless game with a four game hitting streak to see him hit safely in 15 of 16 games over a one month span.

With SS/RHP Logan Goodnight (The Linsly School) already committing to Penn State, Casto is now the highest ranked uncommitted prospect in his class in West Virginia.
