Weekend Preview: Appalachian Aces visit Garrett College this Sunday

Josh Kuykendall
West Virginia Director of Scouting

The Appalachian Aces will visit Garrett College on Sunday to face the Lakers at 10:00 am for (1) seven inning game. 30 minutes after the conclusion, the Aces will face Division II Fairmont State for (1) seven inning game.

"This will be another great test for our guys. Not only playing both of these good programs, but they get to experience what it's like to be a college baseball player. When they get to college, games won't always start at Noon. The weather also won't always be Sunny and 80 degrees, so it will be good for them to see a true day in the life of college player." said Head Coach Josh Kuykendall.

Eric Hallenbeck enters his fifteenth season as head coach of Garrett College’s baseball program. They compete at the NJCAA Division 2 level. The Lakers have made the Region 20 playoffs every year under Hallenbeck, including a final four appearance in 2015 with a 31-21 record. Prior to Garrett, Hallenbeck served as an Associate Head Coach and top assistant for seven years at Frostburg State University. During his tenure at Frostburg State, he helped guide the team to a 205-102-1 overall record, while compiling a 54-19 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference record. As FSU’s recruiting coordinator, the Bobcats won three AMCC Tournament Championships (1998, 1999, 2004).

"Eric is a really good baseball coach and even better person. His teams always have a scrappy, grind it out mentality. He does a great job, and i really appreciate the opportunity to put guys in front of him." said Kuykendall.

The Aces will then turn right around and play Fairmont State University who is lead by Phil Caruso. Caruso is entering his fourth season leading the Fairmont State baseball program after being named head coach in June 2015. In 2017, Caruso was named the Mountain East Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Falcons to a program record 29 wins.

"Phil has been around baseball for a long, long time. His teams are always tough and  we are looking forward to seeing where our guys stack up."
