He receives with soft hands and maintains proper arm angles. Offensively he starts from an athletic stance, and maintains good balance throughout his swing. He attacks the baseball with an uphill bat path and fast bat speed, producing exit velocities up to 92 mph. Overall Powell is an advanced catch and throw catcher with enough offensive aptitude to handle the catching duties early on at the collegiate level.

His footwork needs some development and would benefit from moving more toward second base, but his strong arm makes up for it now. He is an advanced receiver with quiet, soft hands and a wide stance. He moves well laterally and stays around the ball when he blocks. Offensively he has a short compact swing with fast bat speed. He bat path is slightly uphill. He gets extension through contact. He can not maintain balance due to diving in over the plate. Powell is a good defensive catcher and projects to get better as he fills out into his frame.
