Vandy commit. The 6 foot 4, 185 pounder proved once again why he has the most 5 tool potential of any player in the country. But the tools aren’t all Jones possesses, the intangibles are what I think will allow him to reach his ceiling quickly and sustain it for a very long time. They are… Pitch Recognition - spin (or lack of it w/ CH) early out of hand & slow down his forward move to time it up. Also being able to make correct a split second decision on location and movement of a certain pitch, so he can match plane properly. These skills all lead to elite plate discipline, which Jones is well on his way with. Baseball IQ - to prepare for a play before it happens, such as the perfect throw he made to cut down a lead runner in this game. To adjust to what a team’s plan is against him, take an extra base, play to a hitter or pitchers tendency. Instincts - to get great jumps on the basepaths & CF, the best route to take on a ball 350 ft away, feel for the outfield wall, and how the ball will carry in the wind or off certain players bats. Jones separates himself in every way possible.
Vandy commit. 6 foot 4, 185 pounds, most projectable body in the country. Everything he’s hyped up to be, can see his dad’s mannerisms in his game from swing & finish, head first slides on steals, and incredible jumps & routes in CF. Made a very difficult catch on the wall last night over his shoulder look easy. Generational defender from his instincts & range to his arm. Advanced pitch recognition, spitting on multiple breaking balls out of zone. Showed great aptitude on a SL he laced up the middle. Slowed down stride when he saw spin - hanging in the air just split second longer, stretching his load to keep his hands from stopping while he timed up.
The son of Andruw Jones, Druw has a tall, lean and live frame with room to fill out. He’s a very athletic outfielder with plus instincts and good routes. He has excellent range to go with good closing speed. His throws are accurate with good carry. At the plate, he has an advanced approach with a quick, compact swing. He catches up to high velocity and keeps the barrel in the hitting zone with the ball jumping off his bat. He has the ability to drive the ball to all fields. He has the speed to steal bags and projects to be a plus defender in the outfield.
2020 Area Code Games
2022 OF Druw Jones (GA, Vanderbilt recruit) didn’t enjoy the statline filling that he normally shows, but the upside is even more impressive. Wiry long and thin with elite athleticism, the 6-foot-2, 175-pounder might hold the highest upside in the class, and showcased an innate ability to slow the game down at the plate. His flat plane produces louder contact, and he had no issue covering the plate and utilizing the entire field. What stood out most about his upside came in batting practice where he showcased some big power to the left centerfield gap, and effortlessly cleared the fence on multiple occasions.
PBR Showdown
Vanderbilt commit. 6-foot-3, 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, elite athlete, lean, lanky frame, one of the top bats in nationally in the 2022 class. Projectable frame that has not even begun to fill out. Tall setup at the plate, reverse toe-tap stride, hands drop and load back smoothly. An advanced bat, high level feel for the barrel and the zone, showed an innate ability to barrel the ball routinely. Athletic hands coupled with bat speed allow for Jones to drive the ball with force to all fields, with added strength to his frame, will be able to impact the game for both average and power.
His quick-twitch tools are very loud across the board and he’s able to punish baseballs best by lagging his bat through the zone, generating regular hard-hit contact. Jones is a high-follow prospect for this mix of premium tools and athleticism. His bloodlines only bolster confidence of Jones’ ability to continue maturing at this rapid pace, as the son of the five-time MLB All-Star and Atlanta Braves legend of the same name.
