8/15/23

Cape Cod: Continued his development as a hitter, posting a .267 average with seven doubles in 111 plate appearances. A talented work-in-progress, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound corner infielder/outfielder has plus arm strength in addition to solid speed in his toolset, running a 4.26 home to first base.

3/11/23

The corner infield/outfield prospect redshirted in 2022 and was hands-down the best player this past fall for the Wildcats. Strong and athletic at 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, he has plus raw power from both sides of the plate. He also showed above arm strength from third base during a fall scrimmage. During this latest look, the switch-hitter looked to have trouble seeing the baseball and struggled at the plate with three strikeouts from the left side during Saturday’s game against Southern Illinois. He did connect one time for medium-hard contact against a breaking ball for a flyout the other way, but otherwise struggled against spin from the Saluki hurlers. As a 2023 draft-eligible redshirt freshman, McCoy needs many more at-bats to paint a better picture of what value he may have for the next level, but there’s little doubt he presently possesses the tools, body type and competitive makeup to develop into a top five round prospect in 2024.

Rising Hitters: Strong and athletic at 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, the switch-hitter doubled and homered, both from the left side, against Xavier this fall. The up and coming corner infield/outfield prospect redshirted in 2022 and was hands-down the best player this fall for the Wildcats. He has plus raw power from both sides of the plate and showed above arm strength from third base. He moves better to his left than his right and will need to continue to work to become a complete defender at the hot corner. Currently, he looks the part of a mid-to-early Day Two type of prospect with his athleticism, tools, skills and competitive makeup. Day One is not out of the question with continued development and high-level performance, whether it’s in 2023 as a redshirt-freshman eligible, or in 2024 after his third year in college.

10/22/22

vs XavierOffensively, the Wildcats were led by up and coming corner infield/outfield prospect James McCoy. The athletic 6-foot-4, 205 pound switch-hitter doubled and homered, both from the left side. McCoy red-shirted in 2022 and has been the best player this fall for the Wildcats. He has plus raw power from both sides of the plate and showed an above arm from third base. He moves better to his left than his right and will need to continue to work to become a complete defender at the hot corner. Currently, he looks the part of a mid-to-early Day Two type of prospect with his athleticism, tools, skills and competitive makeup. After much success in the Northwoods League this past summer, batting .302 for Kenosha, he has begun to build his resume for the draft. Day One is not out of the question with continued high level performance, whether it be in 2023 as a sophomore eligible, or in 2024 after his third year in college.

10/01/19

6-foot-4, 190-pound switch-hitting outfielder and first baseman, long, projectable frame, athletically built, present strength with much more to come. An offensive force from both sides of the plate. Takes a wide, crouching setup, hands load back smoothly, reverse toe-tap stride, great balance throughout. Does a nice job of keeping things short and using his long levers to his advantage. Gap-to-gap type approach, drives the ball back up the middle with a short, quick swing, smooth actions at the plate. With improved launch angles, will be able to consistently hit the long ball.
