Verbally commits to the University of Iowa
Strong athletic frame. Up to 85 mph on mound. Arms works ok. Above average defender in centerfield. Projects as a rightfielder at college/ pro level. Physically impressive right now. Still has loose body and actions. Good rhythm in box. Above average bat speed with middle to pull approach.
Summer 2020: Throwing from a three-quarter slot, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound aggressive left-hander works quick and has a reliever look to his delivery. Through three starts this summer Baumann has struck out 16 in 8 IP, yet has allowed seven hits and walked six for a 5.63 ERA. He has more control than command to his stuff with his fastball sitting 89-91 mph, touching 92 and ranging between 1925-2150 rpm. He locates well to his glove side with the ability to tie up right-handed hitters inside with his heater. His best pitch on this look was a plus changeup at 80-81 mph with a 1500-1685 spin rate and good bottom to its finish. Baumann showed excellent arm speed early in the game with this pitch, but slowed his arm and aimed the ball in the middle innings, losing effectiveness and quality. The change played closer to average at that time. He also threw an average 74-76 mph curve and manipulated it into a hard (77-79) slurve when needed. Spin rates ranged from 2050-2200. Overall, the Hawkeye lefty had the look and stuff of an early Day 3 prospect for 2021.
2/29/20: The 6-foot-2, 205 pound lefty allowed two hits and one run in relief during Friday’s game against NC State. Capable of throwing a bit harder, his fastball sat 91-92 mph during his three-batter appearance. He is still ramping it back up after getting mono in January. (Seifert)
8/20/19: Worked in to the low-90s with his heater this spring but was in the 86-88 mph range in our summer looks, mixing in a mid-70s curve with 11-to-5 action and a firm 78-79 mph changeup.
