8/9/15- 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.5 runner. Body is beginning to develop physically. Solid strength. Stiff swing. Barrel is in/out of zone. Pull approach. Some strength in swing with 89 mph exit velocity. Athletic actions at first base. Soft glove and moves well laterally. 78 mph arm strength across. Projectable body on mound. Clean arm action. Solid mechanically. Fastball shows above avg. life with ASR at 79-81 mph. Slider is better breaking ball; thrown at 72-73 mph with tight rotation and depth. Curveball is “get me over” pitch presently. Above avg. feel for changeup with ASR and thrown at fastball arm speed.
5/15/15- Welch continues to blossom physically and is projectable as he enters the summer of his junior year. Controlled delivery and rhythm. Consistently throws strikes and is around zone with 4 pitches. Strides in-line to plate and finishes pitches well. Short clean arm action from high ¾ to OT slot. Some head jerk on release due to high slot. Overall minimal effort on release. Curveball lacks arm speed; slider is better at present time with greater velocity and action. Strong follow through summer; with hopes of velocity increase.
3/15/15- 6-foot-3, 175-pound right-handed pitcher who continues to develop and make strides. Has grown 2 inches since October. Slight back-turn delivery. Hides ball from batter. Has athleticism and rhythm in mechanics. Travels across the rubber and lands slightly closed at times. Arm is fast and loose from high ¾ slot. Fastball has steep downhill plane at 79-81 mph. Will cast curveball and lose arm speed. Gradual break with 11/5 shape. Slider is above average offering with greater arm speed and length to arm circle at 69-70 mph. Has feel for changeup in zone; near fastball arm speed for strikes and average action at 72-74 mph. Welch is an interesting prospect; one to watch closely over the following months. Is a sleeper in 2016 class and is a Strong Follow into the summer.
Fall Underclass Showcase October 2014
6-foot-1, 175-pound 2-way player. 7.82 60 time. Right-handed hitter with level swing plane. Pre-set hand position with ok rhythm. Long stride into contact. Pull approach with 69 mph exit velocity. Shows average actions in field. Field balls flat footed with limited momentum. Arm works well with accuracy across at 75 mph. Projectable body on mound. Long legs. Will continue to add strength. Fastball is straight with downhill plane for strikes at 77-79 mph. Tends to wrap curveball early in delivery. 12/6 rotation with late breaking action at times. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed with sink for strikes. Not done growing. Has requisite ability to pitch. Interesting to see how body continues to develop and if velocity will translate.
