Cape Cod: A high-profile recruit out of Massachusetts with a hockey background, Penney posted a .996 in part-time duty as a freshman in 2022 to help Notre Dame reach the College World Series, then hit .241/.347/.453 (.800 OPS) with 10 homers in 202 plate appearances during a somewhat disappointing sophomore year this spring. But he was one of the best players for Orleans this summer, hitting an aggregate .284 with five homers, five doubles and 25 RBIs in 183 at-bats between the regular season and playoffs. Penney is a versatile defender who profiles best at second base but also handles himself well at the hot corner, where he saw most of his action for the Firebirds. He was also pressed into duty at shortstop, but his arm is light for the position, where he was a bit mistake-prone. But Penney’s calling card is his lefthanded bat, which produces good power to all fields. Strong and compact at 6-foot, 195 pounds, Penney has an open, upright setup with good balance and fast hands, and he impressed with his barrel awareness this summer as well as his ability to drive the ball. He’s no better than a fringy runner and did not attempt a stolen base this summer, but he is a perfect 12-for-12 in steals during his Notre Dame career, so he can pick his spots. Orleans manager Kelly Nicholson also praised Penney’s hard-nosed makeup, calling him “a quiet assassin” who is ultra- competitive.

6-foot-1, 190-pound left-handed hitting infielder. Jack has done a very good job on his frame as he is more physical and it shows. He ran a 6.94 sixty at the event. The approach in under control in the infield as he shows soft hands, solid footwork and a short arm path. He threw 77 mph across the diamond as he was just working at an easy level. The bat showed well in game and during the batting practice session. He displayed an exit velocity of 92. The setup is semi-wide and the bottom half is under control. The path is flat with a small amount of lift to it at contact. He should be a very solid ACC player at Notre Dame.

The athleticsm is excellent and he has the ability to play multiple positions in the infield. Threw 84 mph across the diamond out of a short and clean slot. The glove and feet work easily throughout the process. The bat has a tee exit velocity of 92 mph. The setup is even in base, small pick up and put down of the front foot as the ball approaches. The path is flat and clean to contact, stays on the ball for the most part, gets too big in plus counts. Legit player who could play anywhere in the country.

5-foot-11, 170-pound left-handed hitting middle infielder. The athleticsm is legit and he can swing the bat. The approach in the infield is appropriate and simple. The glove is soft and he works his feet through the ball. The arm is clean and short on the back half. Threw 78 mph across the diamond with easy effort. At the plate, the tee exit velocity is 89 mph. The setup is even in base, simple pick up and put down of the front foot as the ball approaches the hitting zone. The path is simple to the ball and he explodes through the ball.
