Maryland Preseason All-State Session II
Body: 5’11’’, 175 pounds. Projectable, lengthy frame with some strength present.
Hit: RHH. Wide open, slightly bent stance with the barrel showing quick rhythm positioned behind the shoulder. Utilized a leg hang stride with a barrel tip at the top of the load to initiate the swing through a flat path into the hitting zone. Quick hands at the dish with some jump off the bat to the pull-side; athleticism shines in the box with XBH abilities there to be had. Notched a 75% fly ball rate emphasizing loft in the approach, and recorded a 312 foot peak batted ball distance.
Power: 86 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power at the moment with quality swings on pitches out over the plate.
Arm: RH. C - 64 mph. Short, over the top slot with accuracy on the bag.
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.19-2.43. Narrow base in the crouch with above-average receiving abilities. Worked thumb up through the low pitch with subtle, quiet movements in the glove hand. Efficient straight line footwork on pop times, staying low in the legs with a quick trigger. When additional arm strength comes, the pop times should continue creeping down towards 2.00.
Run: 7.55 60-yard time.
Stands 5-foot-10, 160-pounds with an athletic frame. Hits from the right side with a narrow upright stance. Stance starts open and finishes closed after a short stride in. Hands load back in rhythm, short to the ball, and swing has some uphill tilt to it. Lower half finishes completely. Exit velocity was 78 mph. Jab step to get in line, finished through the throwing lane, and a clean exchange. Arm action was short, but seemed to get stuck at the back. Throws from a three-quarter arm slot with a positional velocity of 2.28-2.43. 60 time was 7.47.
Jack Mehler C/1B Wootton (MD) 2022
Athletic frame at 5-10, 150-pounds. Athletic open stance from the right side with hands set high and forward. Small stride forward landing on line, hands make quick load back, and has a short quick path to the ball. Slightly uphill path and high finish to the swing. Used the whole field, but did a nice job pulling hands in and working the pull side when needed. Exit velocity was 72 mph. Behind the plate feet Mehler showed consistency with throws around the bag after a quick exchange and throw from a shorter arm action and high three-quarter arm slot. Arm strength was 63 mph and pop times ranged from 2.34-2.45 which will get better as he adds strength to the frame. Ran a 7.53 60.
