Ashton Bardzell from Ramsey High School is perhaps the best athlete in New Jersey's 2015 class. The Hartford commit is 6-2 and is very physical and strong. Bardzell has really come along during his high school career to get to this point. He recently tied New Jersey's homerun record, which was previously set by former Millville star turned American League MVP, Mike Trout. His 18 homeruns are currently the tops in prep baseball in the country.
Bardzell had been an infielder but now plays the outfield for Ramsey. He projects to be an outfielder at the next level, college or pro, due to his above average speed and a stiffer arm action.
Bardzell hits from the right side and uses a square stance with his feet set slightly larger than shoulder's width apart. His load is quiet; he creates some rhythm by slowly rocking to his front side before transferring his weight back and his hands into a cocked position. Utilizing a small leg kick into his stride, Bardzell showcases his tremendous body control, explosively transferring his weight to his front side using a dynamic lower half. Keeping his head and eyes still, Bardzell has the unique ability to get caught on his front side and still generate enough bat speed to drive the baseball. Bardzell is largely pull-side with plus power as he creates enormous leverage with a slightly upward swing plane.
It will be interesting to see where he is playing in the Fall of 2015 and beyond.
9-10-2018: Six-foot-two, 205 pound senior. Athletic, yet still a bit raw. Followed-up a strong junior season (.308/.412/.532) at Hartford with another solid showing in the Cape (.316/.415/.491). Some swing/miss to his gave; 36 strikeouts in 137 plate appearances. Above average runner underway. Stole four bases in 39 games this summer after stealing nine in 12 attempts last spring. Above average raw power with noticeable hand strength. Enough arm strength to play all three spots. Undrafted as a college junior, Bardzell has Day Two potential as a money-saver senior sign in 2019.
