Cape Cod: A highly-regarded recruit to Boston College two years ago after he went unsigned as the Yankees’ 20th-round pick in the 2021 draft, Hard has struggled in two spring seasons with the Eagles to the tune of an 11.85 career ERA in 41 innings. His performance this summer should provide hope that the 2024 season will be different. He was arguably Harwich’s most consistent pitcher from start to finish, and he ended the campaign with a 2.34 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 23 innings. It wasn’t always perfect, as some of the control issues that have hurt him at BC popped up as he walked 18 batters, but it was a definitive step forward. He threw at least two innings in seven of his eight appearances, and he didn’t allow any earned runs in four of those appearances. Just once did he allow more than two runs in an appearance. Hard has a pro frame at 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds and a pro fastball at least in terms of velocity, as that offering reaches the high 90s. How well he can repeat this success next spring at BC will have large bearing on how the Eagles perform on the mound and how the scouting industry perceives the big righthander ahead of next summer’s draft. 

Boston College Commit, 6-foot-5, 198-pound proportional frame. At the plate, the right-handed hitter showed his power in the box with a strong exit velocity of 95 mph. Started in a crouched open  stance, had a smooth load and used a leg kick. Had an uphill swing plane, explosive bat speed and extension on his finish. Produced some loud contact and found multiple barrels during the round. In the infield, had a live arm with throws that topped out at 90 mph; had a quick twitchy exchange and soft hands. Used a high ¾ slot with loose arm action. Projectable on the mound, showing lightning arm speed, had a loose arm action and an over-the-top angle. He is a drop-and-drive type pitcher. Has a consistent balance point and uphill shoulders. Lands square. Slider (73-75 mph) showed depth at locations in the bottom of the strike zone. Displayed arm strength with a fastball that was clocked at 88-89 mph with a max of 89 mph (tied for top #1 velo at the event); has some late life. Showed a 11/5 curveball (67-69). He had cutting action on his changeup (76-78).
