Smith, a 5-foot-10, 165-pound catcher out of Newfoundland shows some promise in his game. At the plate the swing is loaded with good extension with his hands from the left side. The swing is geared towards the middle and to his pull-side. In the outfield the feet work well with good rhythm, the arm works long and smooth with some carry on his ball. Behind the plate Smith has a good transfer and a quick first step on his throw downs. Ball also shows good carry from behind the plate, a solid JUCO catcher who might perform on both sides of the ball.
His versatility was on display all over the field. We like him long-term from the outfield or perhaps behind the dish. His outfield velocity was 78mph, but looked comfortable from the crouch with a 2.35 pop time. The exit velocity was 82mph and looked athletic all over the field. Raw tools, with an obvious commitment to refine his craft.
