Southern Tier Sluggers Workout

Avery, a 2018 right-handed hitting middle infielder/RHP, stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 160 pounds, ran a 7.52 60.
Offensively- Starts from an upright slightly open lower half, some weight shift to the back knee, with the hands held in front of and slightly above the back shoulder while the barrel of the bat is nearly perpendicular to the ground with some wrap movement towards the pitcher. Gets to the launch phase of the swing with a slight lift of the lead foot, minimal stride towards the pitcher landing on the toe, while the hands are loaded straight back, shoulder height, staying slightly inside the back shoulder with the barrel of the bat lowering toe 45-degree angle. Drove the ball, middle in and waist high, very well from the pull side line to the center of the field. Would be able to generate more bat speed and increase the exit of 80 MPH if the hands could stay behind the rotation of the hips a split second longer, as well as landing on the whole lead foot which would help the lead hip stay in longer as well. Defensively- Approaches the ball with some tentativeness, fielding the ball directly at the center of the body with the palm of the glove down. The transfer is a longer circular motion with some narrow drive with the lower half. With a shorter arm action, transferring the ball from the center of the body with the thumbs down, would help create a shorter arm action and help the lower half to be more in sync with the lower half. Registered an arm velocity of 67 MPH, with the throws showing good accuracy but needing more carry which will happen with some minor mechanical adjustments. Size may dictate a corner position at the next level.  Pitching- Works from the third base side of the rubber with both hands rested waist high in the center of the body. Gets to the gathered position of the delivery using a side step, with the lead foot, to the first base side and pivot foot dragging to the center of the rubber, while the hands remain chest height  and lead knee elevating slightly above the waist. Sticks the landing with the lead toe directly at the catcher while the front side has started a slight horizontal pull but gets quality toe drag while getting over the lead knee. The fastball, thrown from a high to mid ¾ arm slot, topped out at 73 MPH and showed good down angle at times as well as working to both sides of the plate. The change-up, showing quality differential off the fastball at 65 MPH, showed good arm side run as well as sink. The curveball, topping out at 66 MPH had tight rotation as well as 10-to-5 shape.
